Lumbry Park Veterinary Specialists is a large multidisciplinary referral hospital providing veterinary referral services across the South of England including London and the Thames Valley. Our services include Orthopaedic surgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Oncology and Diagnostic Imaging. The hospital is an ISFM gold feline clinic and was awarded the BVHA design award for an outstanding working environment. We are part of CVS (UK) Ltd, the largest provider of integrated veterinary services in the UK; the referrals division currently operates eight referral hospitals in the UK and Ireland.
We are looking for a passionate and enthusiastic RVN to join our Internal Medicine nursing team. This role supports and works closely with the medicine clinicians, resident(s) and interns in providing a world-class service to clients, referring vets and the patients under our care. This is achieved through a collaborative approach to communications, efficient workflow, optimised patient care and rehabilitation.
This is ideally a full time role working 40 hours a week (Monday-Friday) with a 1:5 contribution to the weekend rota and time off in lieu. Participation in the bank holiday rota is also required twice a year.
Key duties and tasks include:
- Attend morning rounds and understand inpatient requirements. In addition, collect any prescriptions to be dispensed
- Review inpatient treatment plans and kennel charts and act on discrepancies and errors (medication dosages, transcription errors, etc.)
- Contribute to medicine-specific inpatient care in wards including medication administration/dispensing, blood tests, NO feeding tube placement, assisted feeding or tempting to eat, tube/drain management as appropriate
- Act as a point of contact for leadership and training for medicine-specific in-patient care techniques for ward and rotational RVN teams
- Assist with the admission process including physical examinations, blood and tissue sampling (including follow-up blood tests such as bile acid/ACTH stimulation tests), IV cannulation, admission/workflow paperwork
- Conduct sedation/anaesthetics and recoveries for medicine patients and support other departments as directed by your line manager
- Support and participate in diagnostic imaging where relevant
- Help support oncology team with treatments and procedures
Key skills and abilities include:
- Knowledge of internal medicine-specific conditions
- Good standards of inpatient care
- Laboratory – timing of blood sampling for specific tests, sample handling and processing
- Strong communication skills
- Resilience – ability to work under pressure
- Experience of working in referrals is not essential as training can be provided
- Experience in anaesthesia
