UK Energy Indirect Tax Advisor


We have an exciting opportunity to join our EY Indirect Tax team with a particular focus on clients in the Energy & Resources sector. Our successful team helps support and deliver Indirect Tax advice (including VAT, Customs duties, Excise duties and Environmental taxes) to their clients in the UK and globally. The advice spans the entire spectrum of the sector from exploration for natural resources, production, mining and processing to commodity trading, power & utilities and the development of renewable power and green energy. In a rapidly changing and expanding industry sector we are at the forefront, helping clients navigate the various opportunities and challenges they face. This can include partnering with clients on advisory, assisting and enabling businesses with compliance, or dealing with the increasing requirements and benefits of digital transformation.


The opportunity


We are looking for a team player who is a motivated, committed and ambitious tax professional to join EY’s Indirect Tax Energy team. This is an opportunity to be involved in the transformation of the Energy sector, supporting clients with an increasing focus on more sustainable operations, low carbon energy generation, battery storage and the transition to renewables, alongside the more traditional energy and resources businesses.

Your key responsibilities

  • Build and maintain tax relationships with clients and provide high levels of client service
  • Build relationships both within the firm and externally with clients, identifying opportunities and managing expectations
  • Contribute to winning new work by proactively managing existing clients and contribute to winning new clients
  • Understand and assist in the full spectrum of the client lifecycle from onboarding clients, through delivery of projects to engagement management, and everything in between
  • Responsible for day-to-day delivery of client liaison


Skills and attributes for success

  • Thorough grounding in UK VAT legislation and application
  • Keen to develop further strong Indirect Tax technical skills
  • Ability to build strong client relationships
  • Excellent communicator in range of situations both written and oral
  • Ability to identify areas of risk, carry out an effective review and know when to refer upwards
  • Client focused and commercially aware
  • Relationship management skills with ability to manage client expectations
  • Team player with ability to build effective relationships at all levels


Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Project management skills, ability to plan and prioritize work, meet deadlines, monitor own budget
