About the role


Our Human Resources Higher Apprenticeship scheme in the People Function is an alternative route to university and provides you with the opportunity to earn a competitive salary whilst gaining on the job experience & knowledge across different teams whilst studying to achieve your professional Level 5 CIPD qualification.


Our People function enables the business to deliver on its strategic priorities through ensuring we have the right people, in the right place at the right time with the correct capabilities required to add value and drive action. We set the group strategy on talent, recruitment, performance management, employee relations, DEI, reward, culture, colleague communication and engagement as well as partnering directly with the business to ensure they are set up for success.


On the program you will gain exposure to different parts of our business and be an integral part of the team from the start. The People function plays an important role across several different areas, and you’ll be actively involved in the following:


  • Understanding the HR systems, policies, and processes, support the delivery of cyclical BAU activities, and support the delivery of key HR processes
  • Analyse engagement results and help the business to develop action plans to further drive engagement across teams, and report on people data and driving insights
  • Work with different centres of excellence and business stakeholders to develop toolkits, and provide services to the core business in the delivery of generalist and specialist HR services
  • Provide internal and external insights to help facilitate thought leadership, playing an integral part in business decision making
  • Support on key people projects and activities

Through the People Function Apprenticeship Programme, you will undertake a 2-year Level 5 apprenticeship which upon successful completion will lead into a permanent role within National Grid’s staff structure. You’ll complete 4, six-month placements around the People Function during the 2-year programme.


The Level 5 apprenticeship will give you the opportunity to experience different teams in the business and will include placements within the centres of excellence and business partnering teams based in our Warwick office where you will develop your base level Human Resources knowledge and technical skills.


During your two years you will also take part in various off the job training to develop your skills and you will also study towards an accountancy qualification through a dedicated training provider.

About you


If you are a good communicator who is able to engage with people and has an interest in Human Resources, then this could be the role for you!


The People function is crucial the success of National Grid as people are our superpower and ensuring we have the right people with the right skills affects every aspect of the company.


You will need to be a good communicator and be able to engage with people at every level. An interest in Human Resources is a must but more important is your commitment and enthusiasm to learn and develop, and a passion and drive to succeed.


You don’t need prior work experience or specific A-Levels; we will teach you everything you need to know to have a successful and rewarding career in the People Function.


To apply for this role, you’ll have a minimum:


  • GCSEs in Maths & English at grade 5 or higher
  • 2 A-Levels at Grade C or higher, or equivalent
