The Royal Marsden serves a local, regional, national, and international population from two hospital sites, Chelsea and Sutton. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed Health Care Assistant for our day surgery and surgical admission unit. The unit prepares all NHS surgical patients for theatre. We also care for patients who have undergone day surgery operations and interventional radiology procedures. The successful candidate will be part of a dedicated ward team. You will also play a vital role in the efficient running of the investigations clinic which supports the day surgery pre-assessment service. This is full time permanent position. The unit is currently open Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will ideally have 6 months experience and have completed the care certificate training. Self-motivation to learn is important if you are interested in applying for this position. You will be supported to develop the competences required. Informal visits are encouraged. To assist in the delivery of direct/indirect patient care under the supervision of the registered nursing staff. To work with others to ensure the maintenance of an efficient, safe, clean and pleasant environment for all patients. Clinical tasks to be undertaken by HCA’s will be ratified by the Nursing Radiography and Rehabilitation Advisory Committee (NRRAC). T The HCA and Unit/Ward Manager are responsible for ensuring competency. Clinical tasks to be undertaken will therefore be specific to the clinical area. These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator: 2.1.2 Monitor and record patients’ vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation) and report any abnormal results to registered nursing staff. 2.1.3 Measure and record patients’ height and weight 2.1.4 Perform venepuncture and venous blood sampling 2.1.5 Undertake clinical tasks relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off. For example: ECG; urinalysis; MRSA screening swabs, Covid testing, recording of allergies on EPR and other clinical tasks where training/competency sign off has been deemed appropriate for HCA and has been ratified through NRRAC 2.1.6 Assist with nutrition where applicable (i.e. assisting with menu completion, feeding assistance), working closely with the ward host/hostess 2.1.7 To demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training; understand infection control policy and procedure, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others’ practice 2.1.8 Direct or escort patients and their belongings between departments and clinical areas
