Main purpose of the role:

To be the primary authority on all matters relating to Health and Safety and general well-being in the workplace. Implement and develop company-wide Health and Safety procedures, conducting periodic audits to monitor adherence. Respond appropriately to accidents and near-miss events, investigating and taking responsibility to ensure preventive measures are applied. Collect and monitor KPI data to check overall effectiveness and as part of striving for continuous improvement.

Ensure total compliance with legislative requirements, supporting the Facilities team wherever possible, especially in relation to Health and Safety associated aspects of facilities and property. Ensure systems are in place to appropriately manage contractors visiting Helix.

Advise staff on all aspects of Health and Safety, starting as part of their induction at Helix. Provide continual input to HR in relation to the appropriate training to maintain high standards.

Provide support to employees and the HR team in relation to any aspects of employee wellbeing.

Key responsibilities:

  • Be the first point of contact for Health and Safety enquiries.
  • Oversee the completion and regular review of risk assessments for all work equipment and operations. Ensure the documented output of the assessments is appropriate.
  • Provide support with the development and revision of Health & Safety policies, safe systems of work and working procedures and monitor staff adherence.
  • Support H&S audits and implement agreed actions where responsible.
  • Manage the COSHH system, overseeing controlled introduction of new additions and as well as risk assessing the processes, ensuring emergency protocol is clear and understood.
  • Ensure that all accidents are documented, investigated and improvements are implemented. Adhere to RIDDOR requirements in a timely manner.
  • Advise the company of the correct proportion of trained persons for First Aid, Defibrillator Use, Fire Marshals etc. Assist in defining and sourcing appropriate training for other requirements such as Forklift operation and ESD compliance. Liaise with HR in the provision of all training related to health and safety.
  • Maintain up to date company information sheets for the site(s) Health and Safety Notice Boards.
  • Follow up on action points agreed on the Health & Safety audits and by the Health and Safety Committee within the agreed timescales.
  • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and alarm tests are conducted, lone working procedures are managed, and employees are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Establish a full programme of documented health & safety inspections, audits and checks.
  • Support cross functional meetings as required by the Facilities and H&S Team Leader, including chairing Health and Safety Committee Meetings.
  • Keep up to date with relevant health, safety & welfare at work legislation and communicate relevant changes to the business.
  • Any other tasks that are reasonably assigned to you by your line manager, including development activities, which are within your capability and grade.

Required Education and Industry Experience:

  • NEBOSH (General Certificate) qualified or IOSH qualified and working towards NEBOSH.
  • COSHH Trained.
  • Formulating, implementing and revising H&S policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of current H&S legislation.
  • Handling of H&S investigations.
  • Strong, committed team player with the ability to prioritise and problem-solve under pressure.
  • Ability to display initiative, confidence and professionalism in all dealings.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office applications

Desirable Education, Training and Qualifications:

  • HND or vocational qualification in facilities management.
  • M&E Qualification.
  • Strong background in M&E would be an advantage, and/or a good working knowledge of the principles of M&E systems.
  • Experience in a similar role within an engineering or manufacturing environment.
