Garment Technologist / Product Development Assistant

The role is permanent and is based in our main office working 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday inclusive.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with product development team to create new tech packs in line with departmental timelines, quality standards, and commercial requirements.
  • To support the PD dept by managing the technical aspects of all styles from development of first proto’s, though to final sample. Ensure creative interpretation of Design Brief and RIGHT-FIRST-TIME sample development
  • Measures and Iron all samples prior to a development fit meeting, carry out full preparation for fit sessions and writing notes: assess the sample to review garment construction/ quality and ensure samples are to agree specifications as per ‘Design Brief’ and updates spec sheets accordingly.
  • Take full responsibility for checking samples, providing fit comments, preparing production graded spec, approving wash care labels and barcodes.
  • Set up and monitor a full Quality Control solution throughout the supply chain and in the warehouse from the beginning of the process to the production deliveries to ensure the quality standard is achieved consistently.
  • Promote, publish and use standards, sales and key block shapes to maintain consistency of fit and quality levels.
  • Support Buying, Design and Suppliers by proactively offering focused solutions to technical problems encountered during development and production; drive and promote opportunities for product improvement.
  • Provide clear and direct technical instructions to factories/suppliers with verbal and written communication, comprehensive, appropriately timed and accurate for each styles and developments.
  • Ensure the use of appropriate channel of daily communication e.g. telephone, email, or web cam with internal and external sources to discuss fit or quality issues and sampling/ production schedules.
  • Use business tools and internal/external relationships to ensure that sample and production critical path dates are understood and met; proactively and regularly consult the critical path to meet deadlines; escalate effectively.
  • Take full responsibility for managing own time effectively. Ensure the sampling / fit process is completed within the target dates and any amendments do not impact “on time” delivery.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly departmental tracking meetings with buying or production department.
  • Carry out regular scheduled shops visits to evaluate product quality to higher standards and compare it within the market level.
  • Assess and approve supplier fabric / garment test reports and care labels in line with required standards and delivery schedule
  • Contribute to monthly reporting of warehouse quality performance and product faults, analyse customer’s returns; contribute to weekly assessment of returns report and demonstrate actions taken to reduce faulty returns and liaising with supplier to improve Quality.

What we are looking for:

  • Previous experience working in a technical position in the fashion industry
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook and Word)
  • Computer literacy in QA related software
  • Full understanding of critical path management as applied in a retail environment
  • Sound knowledge of garments fit, garment construction, patternmaking, grading and spec development
  • Full understanding of the fit and sealing process as applied in a retail environment
  • Sound understanding of the commercial production process as applied in a retail environment
  • Full understanding of the commercial textile testing process, quality standards and legal labelling requirements
