Job Title: Fuel Systems Engineering Specialist
Salary: £58,000 – £72,000 (depending on experience) plus car allowance
Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Benefits: 25 days’ annual leave
18% performance-related bonus
Contributory pension scheme: Caterpillar will contribute double the employee’s contribution, up to 10%
Contributory share scheme: Caterpillar will match 50% of the employee’s contribution

An exciting opportunity exists within the Component Engineering department to lead design and development of high-pressure fuel systems on our C4.4/C7.1 platform, across new and current products. As part of a small, friendly team, you will collaborate with a global team of engineers, suppliers and production facilities, shaping solutions from concept to production that achieve world-class levels of quality and reliability.
Job Responsibilities and Duties :
Lead new technology projects to deliver research goals on low-carbon and alternative fuels.
Lead specification and development of new high-pressure common rail fuel system to meet CARB/EPA Tier 5.
Plan and deliver complex fuel system development projects to time, cost and quality goals.
Communicate project status and key issues to peers, customers, stakeholders and management.
Provide technical coaching in fuel systems fundamentals and calibration to a global engineering team.
Provide critical input to gain cross-functional business support for new designs, supplier selection and capital investment.
Evaluate and influence technology concept selection. Develop specifications, negotiate with suppliers, and support engineering teams to deliver quality solutions.
Lead technical risk assessment and define simulation and validation methods for the fuel system.
Investigate and resolve complex technical system issues using 8D methodology.
Collaborate with Product Management to understand customer needs and define product requirements.
Critique technical information, patents, and authorise technical reports to support production design release.
Collaborate with global teams to implement engineering solutions at worldwide facilities.
Use Lean methodology to define new and improve existing processes.
Skills and Experience :
Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience through previous roles:
Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
Experience within progressive engineering.
Gaining a reputation as an expert on high-pressure common rail diesel system development and performance calibration.
Good understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals, engine systems and component development.
Good understanding of fuel system manufacturing principles and processes.
Strong analytical skills, and experience of developing components and systems through simulation, rig testing and complete system testing.
Self-motivated and able to manage and deliver complex projects to meet commitments.
Excellent communication skills and teamwork. Experience of supplier and/or customer management.
Top candidates may also bring the following skills and experience:
Experience of alternative and low-carbon fuels and their impact on the engine and fuel system.
Engineering experience gained in the off-highway diesel engine sector.
Experience of developing components from concept to production using APQP, FMEA and DVP&R.
Chartered Engineer.
