About the Role:


The energy system will continue to change rapidly and fundamentally on the path to net zero in 2050. National Grid are at the heart of these changes, which pose strategic questions for us as a business and for the wider sector. Group Strategy, Innovation and Market Analytics (SIMA) leads on answering high-level strategic questions for National Grid and working with external stakeholders to collectively answer broader questions for the whole industry.


As an analyst within the Market Analytics team, you will be part of a team that navigate future pathways for SIMA by quantifying risks and opportunities for National Grid.


The team combines the latest market intelligence, deep energy market domain expertise and sophisticated modelling tools to provide insights that matter right across the business. We provide a trusted view on energy markets outlook and share insights that help the business to make informed commercial and strategic decisions.

Key Accountabilities:


  • Analyse market data to draw inferences and present results in a clear and understandable format to management and key stakeholders

  • Develop data dashboards and employ sophisticated analytics, machine learning, and/or statistical methods to bring data to life

  • Modelling of the European power markets to support key commercial projects for NGV and other NG businesses covering mainly UK projects, investment decisions, business planning, strategic planning, and new business opportunities

  • Support Group Strategy, M&A, Business Development, Corporate Affairs, Commercial Operations with ad hoc market analysis, modelling and assessments of market impacts

  • Develop and improve Market Analytics’ in-house market models, ensuring they are fit for purpose. Articulate and explain market model inputs/outputs to internal and external stakeholders

  • Develop structured, documented, version-controlled tools that improve the efficiency and value of the team for the business

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of European Power Market Scenarios by providing the modelling tools and insightful analysis on supply-demand balance

  • Contribute to shaping outlooks for global commodity market, in particular natural gas and carbon for use in scenarios. Maintain an up-to-date awareness of these commodity markets in order to quantify and communicate any significant changes

  • Use your analytical and technical skills to become a thought-leader on modelling the big questions and challenges facing the energy industry

About You:


  • Knowledge of GB and EU electricity industry structures and knowledge of carbon and natural gas market developments and recent trends

  • Fluency in Excel with additional Python, Machine learning tools and techniques, VBA/ or other programming skills would be useful

  • Familiarity with Power BI or other data visualization / dashboard development packages

  • Experience developing & employing market models. Previous experience with commercial production cost modelling software, such as: PLEXOS, Aurora, BID3, etc. is a plus

  • Ability to translate model outputs into business insight and articulate impact on investment cases

  • Demonstrated inter-personal skills and ability to influence others, work collaboratively and constructively with project partners, external stakeholders, and internal teams to achieve consensus and positive outcomes

  • Be intellectually curious, enjoy learning, self-motivated and entrepreneurial

Up to £55,000 pa – dependent on experience.

As part of our hybrid and flexible working approach this position offers a mix of office working (based from either our London office at The Strand, or Head office in Warwick) and home working. We can also offer some flexibility in terms of hours/ times so you can manage commitments outside of work too.
