JOB DESCRIPTION: MANAGING EDITOR, THE CANADIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA
The Canadian Encyclopedia is a free, bilingual online resource of over 20,000 fact-checked articles and learning tools about Canada’s history and culture. The Managing Editor will be an individual who is passionate about Historica Canada’s work, has had experience working with a team to achieve deliverables in a timely fashion and is enthusiastic about creating a legacy for all Canadians. The successful candidate is creative, driven and connected with like-minded organizations in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Reporting to the Director, Branding and Programs, the responsibilities for the Managing Editor include:
- Managing editorial staff of The Canadian Encyclopedia;
- Overseeing the successful completion of program deliverables by setting and managing production quotas and other measurable goals for subject editors;
- Serving as handling editor on a limited number of new entries each year;
- Overseeing the editorial calendar, including current events, anniversaries and commemorations across editorial portfolios;
- Overseeing translation workflow and processes;
- Projecting and managing budgets and regular cashflow reports;
- Managing existing and developing new content partnerships;
- Leading strategic planning discussions;
- Establishing key editorial decisions and policies with senior leadership and subject editors;
- Planning and executing user/audience surveys as needed;
- Overseeing permissions requests for The Canadian Encyclopedia;
- Overseeing relationships with consultants (contributors, fact-checkers, translators);
- Overseeing responses to reader emails and queries;
- Representing and promoting The Canadian Encyclopedia at educational conferences as needed;
- Supporting the Director, Branding and Programs, and the Vice President, Operations as required;
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Qualifications:
- University degree in related field;
- 2-3 years experience as a Manager;
- Knowledge of, and experience with HTML coding;
- Bilingual (English and French) is required;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Team player;
- Flexible and easily adaptable to change;
- Knowledge of online media and publishing industry;
- Strong budgeting and time-management skills;
- Professional working experience in the non-profit, heritage or education sector an asset;
- Interest in Canadian history, culture and asset.

- Based on the results of the questionnaire, Historica Canada expects to invite 3-5 candidates to an initial interview via video call (approx. 1 hour). This interview will usually be with 2 Historica Canada staff. Some roles may require a short skills test, which would be provided following the interview.
- Up to 2 candidates may be moved forward to a second interview with the President and Vice President of Operations and will later be asked to provide references.
- We commit to notifying all interviewed applicants of the status of their submission within 6 weeks of the application deadline.
This position would begin July 24, 2023. The first three months shall be considered as probationary period. The annual salary is $70,000, less applicable statutory deductions, which will be paid to you twice a month.

This position is based at Historica Canada’s Head Office in Toronto. Please note: In accordance with Historica Canada’s Remote Work Policy, staff may choose to work from the office, or continue to work remotely. All managers are required to work in office one day per week.
When Covid-19 public health guidelines allow for it, this position may require travel (air and ground) within Canada and subject to government safety protocols.
