Your New Role:


We have a fantastic opportunity for an Ecologist to join our RAMS Defence contracts where we support DIO in the management of housing stock including project works that often interface with protected species. The role will be required to act as a company Subject Matter Expert, co-ordinating, supporting and assuring the quality and efficacy of the survey, licensing and monitoring works that we routinely outsource to dedicated ecological consultancies.

Ecologists plays an important part in Amey as an ambassador for ecology and conservation. As the subject matter expert provide effective guidance and direction on discussions and decisions with internal and external stakeholders

The standard hours of work are 37.5 per week.

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing effective and responsive technical support (on site and remote) in the areas of ecology and conservation
  • To directly undertake and where appropriate to do so; check the accuracy of Desk Top Surveys related to Ecology as performed by others
  • Ensure that the quality and efficacy of the works undertaken by our ecological consultancies is fit for purpose
  • Actively support, monitor and pursue the progress of surveys conducted by external ecologists and EPS license applications made on Amey’s behalf
  • Ensure the status of EPS licence applications is clearly communicated to the Project Team, including Suppliers where necessary
  • Respond to and manage technical queries pertaining to EPS licenses and respond to incidents where damage/destruction or a roost or disturbance of bats has been reported
  • Act as a company focal point for Natural England and Scottish Natural Heritage
  • Advise the business on ecological consultancy appointments and to act as a liaison point for such organisations
  • Monitor, review and positively influence cost control in respect of ecological consultancy services
  • Support the development of Amey’s environmental management system processes
  • Develop, support and deliver relevant ecology and conservation related training materials
  • Carry out focussed inspections and audits of our work when asked to do so
  • Support the business in its objective of quantifying the post scheme biodiversity benefits implemented after projects delivery has been completed.
  • Advise and work closely with design teams to help develop specifications for projects and identify more appropriate materials and wildlife friendly products
  • Provide specialist advice to the business in the emergent areas of landscape management, natural capital and sustainable catchment management. Also provide basic legal advice on matters pertaining to ecology, conservation, and EPS licensing

What makes this role unique is to act as the business focal point for colleagues in DIO’s Estate Stewardship teams. Lead and upskill other members of the team in ecology and other related areas e.g. conservation and biodiversity. Deliver suitable training and awareness on ecology, in order to ensure a consistent level of knowledge across the business.


We want to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree in Ecology or an associated subject
  • Evidence of relevant ongoing CPD in the area of Ecology / Conservation
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail
  • Experience of managing or coordinating multiple projects at any one time and Demonstrable field expertise in an ecological role
  • Sound knowledge of Bat Conservation Trust guidelines and policies
  • Previous demonstrable experience of working with Bats in built environments
  • Previous experience of handling European Protected Species (EPS) license applications
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant environmental law
  • Significant experience of working with Natural England and / or Scottish Natural Heritage

In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have experience in construction, housing property maintenance or related field to help you hit the ground running, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
