Waste operatives are an essential part of the hospital team and their primary aim is the welfare of patients either directly or indirectly. They are also responsible for maintaining a comprehensive, professional and responsive high quality service to patients, staff, visitors and all service users.
Key Responsibilities:
To provide an efficient & timely waste collection service to wards and departments within the Trust.
Collection from waste rooms, areas and departments/wards of all types of waste items including but not limited to:
- Hazardous
- Non-hazardous
- Clinical
- Non-clinical
- Offensive
- Domestic
- Waste electrical items
- Plastics
- Scrap metal
- Chemicals
- Waste cardboard in cages and bins
- Laundry items from internal and external allocated store areas to the laundry if required
- Confidential Waste
- Unwanted and waste furniture items for disposal.
- The placing of waste items and containers in the correct store in the Trusts main waste area for collection and final disposal by the trusts nominated waste contractor.
Core Duties & Responsibilities:
To move closed full and empty waste containers around the Trusts sites carefully whilst taking particular care in areas that have staff, public, and patient’s movements.
To secure any waste areas after use and secure any containers used for the processing, storage and disposal of waste produced by the Trust.
To use Trust vehicles to current procedures and policies and carry out any checks required on any vehicles/equipment utilised for the role. To complete any required paperwork, check sheets & log books & to secure Trust vehicles when not in use in the designated vehicle parking area unless otherwise specified.
To participate in any training considered necessary for the development of waste services & any job specific training required for role.
Ensure that a uniform is worn at all times when on duty and use relevant Personal Protective equipment in accordance with the policies of the Trust and Transport & Waste Department.
Any other duties requested by the Manager or Supervisor to facilitate the smooth running of the department.
Follow protocols, written procedures and instruction from Transport & Waste management team as and when required, regularly reporting to the Transport & waste supervisor, receiving guidance and instruction.
Skills & Requirements:
- Must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Must be able to pass drug test and background check - NOT INSANE, especially after joining the {{ORGANIZATION}} team
- Must be able to lift up to 75lbs of material regularly, up to many times in a day.
- Must have good communication skills, must be able to communicate effectively in English both written and verbally. Must be able to complete all duties in a timely manner.

Salary: £11.50-£15.00 per hour
