A Data Scientist within the Smart Systems team will help to interpret and manage data and solve complex problems using their expertise in a variety of data areas. They will collaborate with business stakeholders to understand business problems by asking the right questions to exploit data and resolve SP Energy Networks (SPEN) business issues.


The role involves the delivery of complex processes and developing detailed insight across the business. There is a significant degree of stakeholder management.


The post holder will use their understanding of various programming languages, data analytical and measurement techniques to solve complex problems, and have the ability to effectively present the outcomes to stakeholders is also essential to deliver robust and actionable outcomes.


What you’ll be doing

  • Develop and produce actionable insights and identify trends from Smart Meters, LV Monitors, NAVI, ESRi and other SPEN applications, industry and external data sources, a number of different statistical, analytical and machine learning techniques
  • Analyse raw data (structured and unstructured) and turn it into meaningful information that SPEN can use to improve their business processes
  • Understanding the phases of product delivery and expert analyses across product life cycles, running the analysis for each stage and contributing to decision making
  • Develop interactive dashboards that combine visuals with real-time data
  • Building scalable machine learning pipelines and using feature engineering and optimisation methods to improve data set performance
  • Develop a cross-domain knowledge base, working across information silos, using analytical insight to make efficiencies throughout the entire asset management value chain
  • Promote and support analytical decision making across the wider business to maximise the return on financial and intellectual capital
  • Provide analytical support to the SPEN Executive team as required
  • Mentor and support Data Science Graduates and Graduate Apprentices

What you’ll bring

  • Educated to degree level qualification in mathematical or related scientific discipline.
  • Experience in analysis and data mining, and in ensuring that outputs of such are actionable
  • Experience in data query languages, particularly, SQL, Python, R, along with strong coding skills, plus awareness of coding best practices
  • Experience in data visualisation and presenting data in graph or pictorial format. PowerBi experience preferable
  • Demonstratable relationship management skills.
  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management abilities.
  • Competent reporting, presentation and self-projection skills;
  • Strong understanding of the SPEN business model and related functions.
