We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank. Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

WPB serves more than 50 million customers worldwide; with HSBC UK as one of the most critical and heavily regulated home markets, with over 15 million customers using our services provided by our three flagship brands, HSBC Red, fd and M&S.

Role Description

HSBC UK’s Red Brand is one of the largest revenue contributors to Wealth & Personal Banking in the HSBC Group and is on a journey to simplify our digital estate, improve the customer experience, and bring in innovative new prepositions for our customers both in Deposits and Lending / Mortgages domains. The CIO will provide WPB UK CIO with full oversight of and advice on all Technology issues related to the brand such as resolution of critical technology incidents & coordination of key change and delivery deployments affecting it. The CIO will also be responsible for developing a brand specific technology strategy and roadmap for the underlying platforms, sponsoring and driving the continued adoption and maturation of DevOps and Agile principles - ensuring platforms are well maintained, stable, secure and sustainable.

Responsibilities

Governance and Committee Memberships

Sitting within the HSBC UK entity and reporting to the WPB UK CIO, the HSBC Red Brand CIO will be a member of the wider UK IT Manco and a core member of the HSBC Red Brand Leadership Team interacting with the respective CEO and Business heads driving the growth agenda in UK.

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

  • The HSBC Red CIO will be responsible for the provision and delivery of all technology services to HSBC Red and its customers, as well as delivering on HSBC Red’s agenda of providing global reach to our customers.
  • Should have experience in establishing credible relationships within the business community with examples of driving wider IT/business change agenda, working at senior stakeholder level
  • Responsible for ensuring that all HSBC Red demand is clearly articulated within global portfolios and for ensuring that relevant information is captured to enable local demand to be prioritised at the global level.
  • Partnering with the Delivery teams and Value Streams to ensure adequate capacity is available to meet the demands for the Brand.

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Act as a key partner to the HSBC Red Business Leadership Team, understanding and opining on matters across the business, as well as acting as a visible leader to the wider HSBC Re d population. Should have experience building and leading large diverse teams to deliver on a business vision.
  • Accountable to WPB UK CIO for managing resources from multiple technology disciplines delivering into HSBC Red, and oversight of all local execution and change portfolio
  • Will provide oversite and steer the teams working across various UK Sub value streams which encompasses the overall accountability for the HSBC Red IT, covering all technology disciplines, from engineering to service management to risk and controls to business management

Functional and Technical Knowledge

  • Should have a proven track record in delivery, particularly of digital products/services, demonstrating experience deploying to and managing mobile and web channels
  • A strong understanding of the retail/personal banking environment, and workings of retail banking products such as current & savings accounts, secured and unsecured lending products, foreign travel, insurance and wealth products as well as the servicing models that underpin these.
  • Maintain services from a day-today operational perspective (acting as an escalation point for incidents, attending and providing updates in the MEC calls, understanding regulatory protocols for reporting etc.) as well as a more strategic point-of-view, managing service sustainability programmes, the local control environment and other service governance & estate management for the technology services.

  • Support the definition of the HSBC Red strategy, and own the local technology strategy that jointly delivers on the business and WPB/Group technology strategies
  • Should have a solid understanding and practical experiencing in implementing/iterating agile delivery methodologies, such as Scaled Agile Framework
  • Ability to manage risk, adopt a customer-first mind-set in managing change, and make decisions to support the best outcomes for our customers, often when under pressure
Requirements

Essential Skillset/Experience

We are looking for a senior technology leader with broad and comprehensive understanding of concepts and principles within multiple disciplines or a fast-changing discipline. A CIO type persona that will be able to handle:-

Business Knowledge - The role will require a comprehensive understanding of several value units / products / regions / legal entities, alongside an advanced understanding of the industry and the relative positioning of the HSBC's products and services.

Leadership - Management responsibility of multiple teams, through subordinate managers, with accountability for independent budgets

Strong Problem Solver - covering a wide range of diverse activities that require complex judgements and solutions based on conceptual thought and strategic vision and analysis

Innovation - proactive in developing ideas, continuously searching for improvements in techniques which add value to the business and has full responsibility for implementation

Accountability – Latitude to make decisions within the objectives of HSBC global business / global function overall. Little guidance is available and role holder is expected to formulate strategy following the objectives of the business.

Strategic - sets strategy for value unit / region / product / legal entity

Communication - The CIO must possess a high level of sensitivity to the audience, be able to modify the beliefs and opinions of others and negotiate with significant latitude for the final outcome.

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting their style and approach to a senior audience
  • Experience working in the financial services industry or another highly regulated industry is mandatory

The role will be based in London but some travel may be required. This role supports Hybrid working
