About Us.

Barnardo's Support with Leisure Service has been established in Cardiff since 1984 and Barnardo's have worked in partnership with Cardiff Local Authority and their Child, Health and Disability Team (CHAD). Support With Leisure is a Care Inspectorate Wales registered service which provides activities and support to children and young people aged from five - 18 yrs. who have additional needs and disabilities. The aim of Support With Leisure is to enable our young people to have opportunities to use their local communities and facilities; to help develop social skills and networks, emotional and physical skills and to have fun. The time spent away from families also provide other family members with a period of respite from the caring role.

All children and families are offered an assessment of need to establish level of support required from Support With Leisure. This can range from 2 - 12 hours per week and can be delivered on a one-to-one basis, group basis or two staff to one child/young person.

Support With Leisure offers a mixture of after school and weekend sessions and our support continues through school holidays and half terms. Throughout the summer holiday we offer a 4 week Holiday Club Scheme @Ely Family Centre for all children to participate in with the help of their support workers. Part of the role will include helping to plan activities and keep records of the activities you are undertaking with the children. You may be required to liaise with other staff and agencies when needed.

What does Role entail?

The successful candidate(s) will be given a full induction to Barnardo's and supported throughout your employment. Full training is provided relating to the role and you will be supported by a line manager and colleagues. Following the agreement of your working pattern, you will be matched with children and families to arrange and agree days and times for supporting families that best suit the whole families needs. Travel expenses @.45p per mile will be reimbursed in accordance with Barnardo's expenses policy.

Your main duties will include:

  • helping children and young people access play and leisure activities in the community
  • assisting with the planning of activities and play sessions
  • engaging children and young people to make choices and encourage new experiences
  • work within the health and safety plans ensuring that the children in your care can safely enjoy each activity
  • work during early evenings and weekends

You will have:

  • an understanding of the needs of children with disabilities and young people.
  • knowledge of activities which are appropriate to children and young people.
  • experience of direct work with children and young people either paid or substantial voluntary experience.
  • ability to communicate and work well with others.
  • be comfortable working in a Team or on your own (after induction).
  • able to travel throughout Cardiff to meet the requirements of the role.

Additional Information:

The main element of our work is delivered early evenings and weekends and you will need to be flexible to be able to provide a service as needed. Some work will be undertaken during the day during holiday times. We are happy to have further discussions if you have alternative proposals. Candidates who wish to apply for up to 12 weeks work per annum during school/university holidays are also welcome to apply.
