1. Job details

Job title: Café Project Worker

Responsible to: Managing Director

Base: 1-2 Craigmillar Castle Road, EH16 4BX

Pay Scale: £27,961 (SJC point 28) pro rata. Funding is initially for two years.

Hours: 15 hours a week (3 hours a day, Monday to Friday), may include some evening/weekend work.

We will review pay levels annually on 1st April. Our aim as our agency grows is to mimic SJC scale points 28-30, but this will depend on funding and our financial situation. Any annual pay award will take into account the rate of inflation and any other relevant factors.

To ensure the efficient and effective achievement of our Community Café for young people, and Let’s Talk (Young People) CIC objectives and aims as outlined below:

Our Mission

Our mission is to help reduce the impact of poverty and inequality and support children and young people in Edinburgh and Scotland, to improve their own sexual, emotional and mental health.

Our work focus

Our current work focuses on:

  • Sexual health, relationships, and parenthood,
  • Emotional wellbeing,
  • Mental Health,
  • Employability,
  • Substance use and risk taking,
  • Understanding the impact of trauma,
  • Reducing inequality.

Our Aims
Let’s Talk has three core organisational aims:

1. To deliver a variety of therapeutic, educational and health promotion services for young people to access in the following environments: a. Schools, b. Informal community settings, c. Streets, d. Drop-ins.

2. To enable young people’s voices to be heard through advocacy and youth participation,

3. To build the capacity of professionals through training, development and consultancy.

Let’s Talk will achieve our aims by:

  • Developing, facilitating and evaluating health education via group work – within schools, community services and other informal settings.
  • Developing accessible, therapeutic group work and one-to-one support services that are responsive to the needs of young people.
  • Training and supporting those who work with young people on a range of health education issues.

  • Collaborating with local young people and other service providers, to ensure that a consistent strategy on health is undertaken.
  • Developing ongoing research into the needs of young people, via evaluation, needs assessments, consultation and word of mouth with young people, local workers and services involved with those young people. This ongoing research will be used to develop and enhance the work of the Project.

3. Role of the Project
Let’s Talk (Young People) CIC is responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of the key areas of work detailed within the Business Plan, namely:

  • Direct work with young people in schools, community agencies and through detached and street work.
  • Training.
  • Support work.
  • Community development.
  • Strategic development.

We have received funding to open a small community café where young people can come and meet, connect and get involved in some of the other projects that are going on at Let’s Talk. This worker will set up the café and then develop and deliver placements with young people.

3a Key Results

i) Delivery of the aims and objectives set for the target areas of work within Service Level

Agreements and the Let’s Talk Business Plan to a high standard. ii) To produce and implement a realistic and manageable work-plan in order to meet organisational targets. iii) To set up and develop our small community café for young people. Promote, implement and deliver placements and training for young people with additional barriers who want to learn about catering work. iv) To open the café once a week on Fridays during term time and then as many days as possible during school holiday periods. v) Work closely with young people on placements and with young people visiting the café, to develop self-esteem and confidence. vi) Liase closely and establish good working relations with other professionals in our Community
Mental Health Partnership, the public, and those working or involved in Health, Education,
Youth and Community Work. vii) To work with the rest of the team to promote and market the café and the employability opportunities. viii) To complete regular reports on the progress of work assigned by the Managing Director. ix) To keep up to date with development work and research within the field of employability and nutrition.

x) To respond to local and national developments within the field of employability and nutrition.

4. Assignment and review of work

Work is generated through a variety of sources including the Managing Director, staff team, external agencies and service users.

A significant proportion of work is self-generated; therefore the post holder is expected to exercise a high degree of self-motivation and autonomy whist working within the organisation’s aims and objectives.

Workload will be monitored on a regular basis by the Managing Director.

The target areas of the Service are formally monitored and evaluated throughout the financial year (April – March).

Staff are appraised on an annual basis using a 360o Appraisal Method against Key
Results Areas and Core Competences (Section 3).

5. Communications and Working Relationships

Internal:
The post holder is expected to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all members of staff within Let’s Talk (Young People) CIC.

The post holder is expected to attend team meetings, supervision with the Line
Manager and any other working groups.

The post holder is expected to exercise written, verbal and presentation skills.

The post holder is expected to produce regular reports for management, funders, team members and external partners.

6. Supplementary information

Annual leave entitlement: 25 days with a further 11 public holidays (pro rata).

Pension
Let’s Talk will comply with the employer pension duties applicable to your employment under Part 1 of the Pensions Act 2008. You will be provided with further details in writing of the pension arrangements applicable to you. Further details of the pension arrangements can be obtained from management.

A contracting-out certificate is not in force in respect of this employment.

Probationary period: Not less than 6 months and not greater than 9 months.
