Job description

We are currently recruiting for Biomedical Support Workers across The South West London Pathology Partnership.

Successful applicants will be based in one of our SWLP laboratories at one of the following locations:

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Croydon Health Services NHS Trust

Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust

However, the post holder may be required to work at any of the SWLP sites as and when necessary.

Following training, the post holder will be expected to participate in the 24/7 shift pattern, which may include working weekends and nights.

PLEASE NOTE - The level of HCAS awarded to the total salary will dependant on which site candidates are based.

Previous candidates who have applied within the last 6 months need not apply again.

Candidates will be required to complete an assessment as part of the recruitment process. If successful, you will be invited to an interview.

Most laboratories operate a 24/7 shift system, providing cover to busy A&E and acute services. Cellular Pathology, Immunology and Microbiology laboratories are based at St George’s Hospital. Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology laboratories are found on all SWLP sites.

The Biomedical Support Worker role includes:

  • pre-analytical sample sorting/preparation
  • data entry
  • receipt and maintenance of stock
  • attending to service user telephone queries
  • health and safety responsibilities
  • post-analytical procedures.
Although the post will not receive support in completing the IBMS Registration Portfolio, the role offers initial laboratory experience to candidates who wish to pursue a career in biomedical sciences. Full training will be provided.

You should have good attention to detail and be able to follow defined protocols. You should be flexible, highly motivated, have excellent communication skills and be a strong, enthusiastic team player, fully committed to patient care.

South West London Pathology (SWLP) is an NHS pathology partnership set up by St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Croydon Health Services NHS Trust and Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide a single, integrated pathology service across South West London and beyond.

On 1 May 2021, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust joined to form an expanded SWLP partnership.
