Associate - Venture Investments

HSBC Asset Management, the investment management business of the HSBC Group, serves HSBC’s worldwide customer base of retail and private clients, intermediaries, corporates and institutions. HSBC Asset Management fulfils its purpose of connecting HSBC’s clients with investment opportunities around the world through an international network of offices in approximately 30 countries, delivering global capabilities with local market insight.
We are currently seeking an experienced Associate – Venture Investments to join the Climate technology (Climatech) investment team. The new hire will be part of the venture and growth investment team. The team currently manages two venture capital funds, a Climatech fund and a Fintech fund. The Climatech fund makes minority investments in private, fast growing start-ups looking to solve our climate challenge while targeting top quartile venture returns.
In this role, you will:
- Work closely with the senior investment team and the portfolio companies. The Associate will support the senior Climatech team by assisting in the management of the fund at various investments stages, including the production of investment research, investment memos, company engagement and deal execution.
- Conduct preliminary analysis of new investment opportunities by assessing the potential of tech disruption leading to superior unit and environmental economics
- Perform heavy due diligence, including technical feasibility and IP assessment, market analysis, competitive landscaping, unit economics and financial modelling, interviews of industry experts and customers, among others.
- Assist with researching investment theses, networking at industry events and conferences, managing deal flow and network databases.
To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:
- Relevant industry experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, startup incubation/acceleration, including, ideally, a year in a venture capital firm.
- A deep passion for Climate. We value impact as much as financial returns. While having an extensive background in climate tech is not required for this role, you won’t be a cultural fit if you do not care about solving the climate crisis.
- Curiosity for new technologies (AI, robotics, biotech, etc.).
- Financial modeling skills, including advanced Excel proficiency. Should ideally be comfortable with cap tables, ROI analyses, 3-statement projections, and modeling of business cases/unit economics for customer value propositions.
- Critical thinker, highly organized, shown to meet tight deadlines along with consistent accuracy and methodic attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and driven; proven to work independently, prioritize work, and achieve results with a high degree of accountability.
This is a Hybrid working role with the base location as London. The successful candidate will have to have the ability to commute to this location twice a week
