Job summary

Whilst DCMS is advertising this vacancy, the successful candidate(s) may ultimately be appointed to the newly created Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).

The team:

The International Analysis Team is a team of seven, combining economists and legal analysts. The team is part of the Digital and Media Analysis Team, which is one section of the diverse analytical community across DCMS. The International Analysis Team works closely with teams in the International Directorate at DCMS. We provide analytical support to the International Strategy, Economic Security and Digital Standards and Internet Governance teams, feeding in evidence to develop effective policy interventions.

The role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for economic analysis to underpin policy development and explore the justification for government intervention in a range of exciting, innovative policy areas. This will involve collaboration with legal analysts and policy advisers to develop an understanding of emerging international trends in digital policy, identify areas of UK strength, and prioritising which countries to engage with on various policy issues.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

  • Conducting desk-based research into digital policy;
  • Performing cost benefit analysis on potential policy interventions;
  • Presenting analysis in an impactful manner;
  • Establishing a network of contacts across government.

Analytical techniques used in this role

The successful candidate will apply economic theory to real world problems. The candidate should be able to apply economic tools and techniques, and synthesising evidence from a range of sources. They will be providing expert advice with regards to appraisal, impact assessments, evidence-based business cases, and evaluation.

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience:

Essential requirements:

  • Economics qualification (undergraduate degree or above)
  • Ability to analyse a range of information and evaluate evidence to make decisions
  • Ability to deliver high quality pieces of work to challenging deadlines

Desirable skills:

  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively across a team to ensure delivery of outputs
  • Ability to clearly explain technical issues to both expert and non-expert audiences using a range of methods
  • Interest in and knowledge of digital policy areas
