Job Description - Zoo Keeper/Cashier

The following document outlines the roles and responsibilities of the Zoo Keeper/Cashier:

Roles and Responsibilities

Cashier: You may be asked to cashier on occasions but this is not essential for your job role, full training will be provided.

  • Being able to count and manage a float within the till and be responsible for the till throughout your shift.
  • Be able to accept cash and card payments from customers.
  • Be able to process cash or card refunds where required.
  • Be able to understand the pricing of items and where to find this information if required.
  • Understand and deliver the introductory safety briefing to all customers upon their arrival at the zoo.
  • Able to issue receipts if required and change the receipt roll if needed.
  • Be able to manage their change levels and advise when change is required in a timely fashion.
  • Being able to identify counterfeit notes and how to carry checks on bank notes.
  • To be able to perform an X reading on the till and perform a Z reading at the end of the shift.
  • To maintain equipment in a safe, secure and in working order at all times.
  • To keep the cash desk area secure in order to prevent loss or theft.
  • To keep the shop area clean, tidy and protected from the elements.
  • To manage stock levels of the drinks fridge and toys and inform the Directors or the Office

Manager when stock is low.

  • Zoo Keeper Roles and Responsibilities

Assisting the Lead Zoo Keeper with the running of the shift which will include the following:

  • Delegating and following up tasks you have given to your colleagues.
  • Ensuring that the zoo is safe, clean and presentable for customer service.
  • Assisting the Lead Zoo Keeper with maintaining arena showtimes are maintained and being able to adapt these taking into account zoo capacity.
  • Adhering to and carrying out the policies and procedures that management put in place.
  • To assist the Lead Zoo Keeper present animals to customers ensuring safe handling practices, informing customers of responsible pet keeping and providing information as required about each species.

All aspects of Animal Welfare:

  • Ensuring that at all times that the 3 basic animal requirements are met:
  • Fresh food.
  • Clean drinking water.
  • Clean and dry bed.
  • To be able to inspect each animal enclosure at the start of each shift, the followings checks must be made:

Animal present and in a healthy condition. Enclosure is secure.

Enclosure is safe and free from hazards that cause injury or harm to either animal, staff or customers.

That the animal has access to the 3 basic requirements; immediate action must be taken if this is not the case prior to continuing your Animal Welfare checks (this can be delegated if necessary but follow up is essential).

Assist the Lead Zoo Keeper with completing the daily to do list of cleaning tasks that need to completed for that shift.

  • To ensure that animals receive enrichment throughout the day.
  • To control animal interactions and monitor customers at all times to ensure that animals are not over petted.
  • To monitor and control animal diets ensuring that they receiving the required nutrition on a daily basis.
  • To maintain and ensure that animals have the correct heating requirements and that any faults are immediately reported to your Lead Zoo Keeper or management.
  • To carry out health checks on animals and advise your Lead Zoo Keeper or management of any concerns.
  • To be able to assist with the administering of medication for animals when required and if trained to do so.
  • To ensure that medication or hazardous products are stored safely and correctly in accordance with company safety standards.
  • To ensure that zoo signage is present and correct and inform your Lead Zoo Keeper or management immediately of any signage requirements.
  • To understand predator and prey conflict and how this can be mitigated within the zoo or on mobile events.

Opening and Closing of the zoo: NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS ROLE

  • Upon arrival at the zoo a check of the perimeter must be carried out of the integrity of fencing and gates making sure that they are locked and secure.
  • Upon entering the zoo grounds checks must be made to ensure that the zoo is safe to enter.
  • When opening the zoo animal enclosures must be checked and animals let out of their overnight bedrooms.
  • When opening the zoo any animal heating and lighting requirements must be turned on or off where required.
  • When closing the zoo all animals must be secured in their enclosures or overnight bedrooms.
  • When closing the zoo any animal heating or lighting must be turned on or off where required.
  • When closing the zoo all doors and gates must be locked an secured and any electrical items not required overnight must be turned off.
  • When closing the zoo you must ensure that the zoo is left clean and tidy and that any general waste is placed in the correct bin and that animal waste is loaded onto the zoo vehicle for disposal at the Southminster site.
  • Be responsible for any keys you may have in your possession and report losses immediately to management.

Safety and Security:

  • To ensure that all staff, customers and visitors are informed of safety information upon entering the zoo.
  • Maintaining the zoo in a safe and secure way at all times.
  • Be able to identify risks that may cause harm and take action to rectify these risks.
  • To provide safety updates to your Lead Zoo Keeper or management on any new risks to the safety and security of the zoo.
  • Be able to record any incidents/accidents in the accident book.
  • Be able to adhere to and follow the zoos safety and security operating procedures at all times.
  • Ensure that cctv cameras are kept clean of obstructions at all times to maintain staff, customer and visitor safety.
  • To assist the Lead Zoo Keeper making sure company vehicles are maintained in a safe and secure way ensuring that your Lead Zoo Keeper or management are advised immediately of any safety concerns, vehicles should be kept clean and tidy at all times.

Zoo Operating Procedures:

  • To follow and adhere to the zoos operating procedure document at all times.
  • To inform management of any updates to the zoos operating procedures document that may be required.

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Maldon, CM9 5JQ: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Education:

  • A-Level or equivalent (required)

Experience:

  • ZooKeeper: 1 year (required)

Licence/Certification:

  • Driving Licence (preferred)
