Royal Mail Heathrow Distribution Centre (HWDC) is one of the UK largest, automated hubs which processes export mail and parcels to Europe and beyond. The HWDC scale is immense. The size of six football pitches, operating 24/7 to strict customs and aviation security specifications.


To support the operation, we have a vacancies for Work Area Operations Managers on the Late Shift , who will be accountable for the day-to-day operation and performance in a defined work area, ensuring the work plan and scorecard targets, including quality, financial, automation and employee targets are achieved.


About the role
Reporting to the Shift Manager, the role is responsible for managing a team of operators, in a defined work area of the plant and leading the team in a way which motivates, creates high performance and commitment.

As Work Area Manager, you will be responsible for Health & Safety compliance within the work area and for creating a working environment where all employees take responsibility for safety and wellbeing in accordance with Continuous Improvement Activities.


You will be accountable for first line HR processes e.g., conduct and attendance, engagement, performance, alongside measurement and display of key metrics for the work area and the analysis and continuous improvement of them.


Other key accountabilities:
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of 30 – 40 frontline staff to include HR processes.
  • Responsible for maintenance and analysis of all Work Area control systems
  • Responsible for the achievement of KPI - shareholders, customers, efficiency, quality, budget & employees - identify trends in performance and create and implement Improvement Action Plans
  • Ensure work area compliance to the health and safety policy (including risk assessment), addressing day-to-day issues, and liaison with union H&S representatives
  • Ensure that all team members are trained to operate new technology, support work area team members through mentoring and one-to-one coaching activity, carry out the delivery of weekly Work Time Learning sessions to own work area team in line with the work and actively engage with staff preparing and delivering Team Meetings to promote front line participation and involvement
  • Maintain consistent application of IR framework, policies & strategies through the involvement of union representatives & employees
  • Liaise with other Work Operations Managers to ensure smooth flows of work across the International Logistics Centre and our Heathrow Worldwide Distribution Centre.

About you
You need to be able to demonstrate the following skills, experiences in both your application (CV) and at the assessment:

  • People skills - good communication skills, able to engage and motivate team members to work to high standards.
  • Data analysis and problem solving – ability to use data to identify trends in performance and then develop solutions/make improvements.
  • Safety – knowledge of safe systems of work, safety tools and techniques and the accident investigation process.
  • Strong drive, enthusiasm and resilience – constantly strives to improve performance, ability to motivate colleagues.
  • Able to work under pressure and in a fast-paced working environment.
  • IT literacy to use internal systems e.g. PSP, TRMS and Microsoft office programmes.
  • Automation knowledge – knowledge of automation, mech performance metrics and the role of engineering in effective automation performance (or prepared to learn this)
  • Relationships – able to build effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders to achieve business benefit.
  • Operational knowledge - operational knowledge of the Export and Import processing of the parcels and the overall pipeline.
  • Experience of team working to achieve results.

Attendance: Monday to Friday (14:00 - 22:15) or Tuesday to Saturday (14:00 - 22:15). A degree of flexibilty is required to meet operational demands. You will be asked to state your shift preference during the application process.
