The Wheel Lathe Operator/ Maintenance Team Member is a key integral role which requires you to work part of a team to ensure that the fleet is serviced and maintained in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner, whilst constantly seeking to improve quality.


What That Means Day To Day

You’ll be part of Alstom where you will be Forklift driving, sanding, chlorinating water points. Other aspects of the role include:

  • Fuelling and system top up.
  • General depot duties e.g.: Line of Routes.
  • Primary fault finding/reporting.
  • Basic maintenance competency e.g.: side skirt cleans, brake pads, block changes etc.
  • Gritting of walkways in severe weather conditions and/or exceptional circumstances.
  • Depot cleaning/general housekeeping
  • Driving company vehicles if certified.
  • Taking of fuel meter readings off rail vehicles.
  • Train cleaning by exception
  • Crane driving and lifting equipment where training has been provided and competent.
  • Mentoring others as and when required.
  • Corrective/ Preventative maintenance (Electrical or Mechanical, Coach Repairing & Plumbing)
  • Secondary fault finding.

Depot or fleet specific requirements where required:

  • To be Authorised person where required
  • Wheel Lathe Operator
  • Workshop repairs
  • Understand and abide by safety notices, rules & regulations and follow safe working practices, H&SAWA and COSHH.
  • Work in conjunction with Alstom’s lifesaving rules.
  • Comply with and enforce Alstom’s Zero Deviation Policy (AZDP).

Who We’re Looking For

  • Ideally a strong Mechanical Engineering background and a foundation in sub system engineering which would benefit from a strong experience of Braking systems.

What we offer


We offer a highly competitive starting salary of c. £33K with a Total Target Compensation equating to £47,429 and 25 days annual leave with the opportunity to increase this to 30 days, healthcare, life assurance, an excellent company-contributed pension scheme, and a wide range of flexible benefits that you can tailor to suit your life-style.
