Main purpose
● To support the vision and strategic direction of IWS by providing outstanding pastoral care that reduces barriers to learning.
● To enable outstanding progress and attainment by ensuring that attendance of all year groups is good.
● To lead the pastoral care of all year groups through the promotion and co-ordination of effective teamwork leading to high standards
● To be accountable to the Senior Leadership Team for the safety and attendance of learners within year groups
● A proportion of time will be teaching
Duties and responsibilities
Principal Duties:
● Take the strategic lead in managing the attendance and safety of all learners.
● Be responsible for the implementation of the school’s systems, procedures and policies in relation to attendance and punctuality.
● Act as the schools Designated Safeguard Lead (DSL)
● Develop and monitor the learning management of the system for the registration process and persistent absenteeism.
● Be responsible for a rapid response system for failing or poor attendance and punctuality including the monitoring of first-day contact procedures for absent learners.
● Work with appropriate staff to develop individual action plans to improve attendance with individual learners where their attendance gives cause for concern.
● Work to raise the profile of improved attendance throughout the school
● Be responsible for all enquiries relating to attendance-learners, parents/carers and staff.
● To establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies/professionals to support the achievement and progress of learners.
● Support learners and encourage positive attitudes to learn online.
● Support the anti-cyberbullying work in a school in liaison with the teacher responsible for Safety Behaviour and Inclusion.
General Duties and Responsibilities
● Create a positive and ambitious pastoral team ethos with staff.
● Monitor, challenge and support the work of the staff
● Lead, facilitate and front assemblies as necessary
● Assist the Executive Headteacher in helping to develop policies and procedures with particular regard to pastoral provision for all learners
● Be an exemplary leader in dealings with staff, learners, parents and outside agencies
● In liaison with the Executive Headteacher plan, coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of Parents’ Consultation and information evenings.
● In liaison with the staff plan, coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of PTA and student councils.
● Liaise with staff to make appropriate arrangements for classes during coaching time when staff are unexpectedly absent, ensuring appropriate cover within the year group liaising with the cover supervisors and other relevant staff to secure appropriate cover.
● Participate in the interview process when required and ensure effective induction of new staff in line with IWS procedures.
● Attend liaisonevents and effectively promote IWS at open days/evenings and other events.
● Meet regularly with year leaders and Senior Leadership Team responsible for pastoral work.
● Promote and safeguard the welfare of the children and young people that you are responsible for or come into contact with.
● Any other reasonable duties as requested by the Line Manager, Headteacher or member of the Senior Leadership Team that is not specified in this job description.
Person specification
Qualifications and training
● PGCE/ CertEd.
● Previous experience of teaching GCSE, A level English although the post is suitable for newly qualified teachers with QTS
Experience
● Successful leadership and management experience in a school or other relevant organization
● Successful experience of online teaching
● Experience of managing safeguarding in a school or other relevant organisation, including:
● Building relationships with children and their parents, particularly the most vulnerable
● Working and communicating effectively with relevant agencies
● Implementing and encouraging good safeguarding practice throughout a large team of people
● Demonstrable evidence of developing and implementing strategies to help children and their families
● Experience in handling large amounts of data and upholding the principles of confidentiality
Skills and knowledge
● Expert knowledge of legislation and guidance on safeguarding and working with young people, including knowledge of the responsibilities of schools and other agencies
● Ability to work with a range of people with the aim of ensuring the safety and welfare of children
● Awareness of local and national agencies that provide support for children and their families
● Excellent record keeping skills and attention to detail, in order to produce reports, take minutes of meetings, and document attendance and behaviour issues or praises
● Good IT skills, including use of learning management systems
● Effective communication and interpersonal skills
● Ability to communicate a vision and inspire others
● Ability to build effective working relationships with staff and other stakeholders
