Web Developer - Full time London, England

Jangala
Full Time London, England 35000 - 43000 GBP ANNUAL Today
Job description

Jangala is looking for a talented Web Developer - with outstanding front-end skills and a desire to learn and use innovative back-end technologies - to join our rapidly growing team in London. They will help us create and deliver innovative humanitarian technologies, focused initially on enabling internet access for communities around the world that need it the most.

As with all roles at Jangala, this will not be a siloed position, the Web Developer will be able to contribute to our work across the software team and beyond.

The successful candidate will help design and implement Jangala’s web and mobile user interfaces, which will help connect millions of people around the globe in the coming years. We’re looking for someone who has excellent skills in Javascript and web technologies, someone with a great eye for attractive design, someone who will enjoy working with our microservice backend, and someone who wants to use their considerable skills in technology for good.

About Jangala

Beginning as a volunteer project providing Wi-Fi across the Calais Jungle refugee camp, Jangala has evolved into a rapidly growing charitably-owned/not-for-profit technology company. Our first mission is to help every school, clinic and community resilience project worldwide access the internet, so societies everywhere have access to critical digital infrastructures in an era of climate catastrophe and unprecedented social strain.

In just our first few years, using our self-designed open-source Big Box and Get Box internet delivery systems, we have provided internet access to over 60,000 people over 5 continents. In the coming years, working with grassroots organisations and major NGOs, our goal is to have connected millions more.

We are winners of the 2022 Clifford Chance SDG Award, 2021 Cisco Global Problem Solvers Digital Inclusivity Prize as well as one of 50 Global Best Practice projects showcased at Expo 2020. Our goal is to become the world’s leading humanitarian technology organisation.

Details of the role

The Web Developer will extend Jangala’s cloud control web app and develop a progressive web app for our local on-device UI. They will also create user-interfaces for Jangala staff as well as our external public websites, working closely with colleagues in the software team to define requirements for our APIs and cloud infrastructure.

More broadly they will be able to assist with our user facing software strategy, and be encouraged to engage widely within our whole software stack and organisation.

The right candidate will play a critical role in our evolution as we create the interfaces and applications our project partners will use at scale from 2024. This is a chance to shape an important area of our organisation and play a part in designing many impactful products over the coming years.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Building a PWA for Jangala’s Local UI, enabling app like functionality even when systems are offline
  • Developing Jangala’s Cloud UI, allowing our partners to control their networks around the world and visualise their performance
  • Using and helping shape our APIs, and their microservice-based foundation code (both embedded and in the cloud)
  • Leveraging novel and appropriate technologies in greenfield Jangala projects addressing important humanitarian challenges

The person we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone inspired by Jangala’s mission and with a desire to innovate to help some of the world’s most vulnerable people. The ideal candidate will have a passion for writing elegant, robust code and a thorough appreciation of the core concepts of web technology. They will be comfortable taking the lead in projects and working with others.

The following skills and experience are required:

  • Degree level qualification or demonstrable equivalent experience in computing or a related field
  • 3+ years of non-academic coding experience, in work, community or personal projects, demonstrable by code and results
  • Fluency in core JavaScript/TypeScript ES6, HTML and CSS
  • An interest in developing servers and embedded technologies using languages like Go and Lua
  • Familiarity with Git

The following skills and experience are a bonus:

  • Experience with using progressive web frameworks to build and simplify complex front end app behaviours (ideally Vue)
  • Some familiarity with advanced web concepts, such as Web Assembly and Progressive Web Apps
  • Volunteering to help others
