Summary of the Waste Operator Apprentice role
As the Waste Apprentice you will report directly to the Waste Manager and be part of the Bioplant and Waste Services Department. You will gain the knowledge, skills and experience to become a competent Waste Operator.
About the apprenticeship
The apprenticeship will last 15 months and will study towards the Waste Resource Operative Level 2 with AXIA Solutions as part of your apprenticeship. You will build a portfolio of evidence to show what you have learned over this time.
Your responsibilities
- Managing Waste collections in SAP.
- Monitoring and updating waste data systems and control stocks of waste on site.
- Attending weekly waste meetings.
- Collecting, storing and despatching of waste.
- Operating forklift trucks and other mechanical handling equipment as the job requires.
- Loading vehicles and stacking goods in designated areas and locating materials in accordance with SAP.
- Maintaining good housekeeping standards in the waste area.
- Sampling waste streams to ensure they meet the hazard material assessment document (HMAD) and can be disposed of via the approved routes.
- Working with Bioplant Manager to identify and transfer waste streams appropriate for treatment at the Bioplant.
- Working with the Environment & Sustainability Manager to drive improvement in waste handling standards onsite.
- Carrying out stock checks of the waste area and book loads off site where required.
- Assisting in investigation of accidents, incidents and dangerous occurrences.

Requirements for the role
- Minimum 5 GSCE’s at grades 4-9 including Maths, English & Science.
- Must have an active interest in waste, environment and safety issues.
- Forklift experience would be ideal but not essential.
- Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Competent with IT systems.
- Must be well organised and be able to work well as part of a team.
- Must be prepared to follow a course of study to gain a formal qualification.
