The team
ITV Regional News and Programmes delivers high quality and trustworthy television and online coverage. Our news magazine programmes at 6pm on television regularly attract a total audience of 3 million viewers each day and we're one of the fastest growing digital newsbrand in the UK. It’s an exciting environment to work in with a huge variety of roles and challenges on offer. We operate in 11 main news production centres across the UK and the Channel Islands. We also have a Political Unit based right in the heart of Westminster. And finally, we produce a range of current affairs & factual programming out of ITV Cymru Wales, UTV and ITV Border.
The role
Are you ready to take the helm of the ITV News Regions political operation at Millbank? We are seeking an experienced News Editor to lead and manage our talented team of correspondents and production coordinators based at Westminster and oversee the day-to-day running of our political coverage. The Westminster News Editor position offers an exciting opportunity to shape and lead the coverage of regional politics at a highly respected and influential news organisation. The successful candidate wiIl be ambitious, creative and passionate about delivering impactful journalism to our viewers.
As manager of the political team, you will oversee the political operation at Millbank, ensuring quality coverage and providing guidance, support and direction to the team.
This role entails…
As part of the leadership team at Millbank, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Head of ITV Millbank Studios and managing a team of correspondents and crews based at Westminster to cover the daily political news for the English regions.
It is vital that you build and maintain relationships with key political sources and figures, including elected officials, party leaders and interest groups. In turn you will act as a key liaison with various stakeholders, including the Editor of ITV regional news, and provide advice and support to our Heads of News and their teams regarding political coverage.
You will ensure our coverage of political stories and analysis complies with our editorial standards and values, including by strong monitoring and analysis of political trends, issues, and debates across the regions. You will identify newsworthy angles and opportunities to provide distinctive and original coverage flagging up stories as they break.
We produce news for multiple platforms and part of your role will be to encourage and generate new ideas. Your expertise will be essential to develop and coordinate strong digital coverage.
You will also oversee the coordination and smooth running of our eight political programmes that are produced from Millbank every month.
Skills you’ll need (minimum criteria)
- Strong experience in reporting, editing, or producing political news.
- Solid understanding of regional politics and government structures, as well as political and cultural sensitivities across our regions and nations.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to manage the delivery of engaging, relevant content under tight deadlines and evolving situations
- Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and people simultaneously.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively wIth a team of editors, reporters and other stakeholders across a multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong technical skills with demonstrable ability to grasp new technology
