JOB DESCRIPTION: Van Team Member

REPORTS TO:

· Co-ordinator : Van Operations

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

· No supervisory responsibilities but may be expected to support and direct volunteers.

MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE

· Work as part of the Van team, collecting donations and delivering Starter Packs and items sold in the Charity’s shops. Other duties may involve helping move stock and donations around the organisation and organising the back shop and stockroom areas.

· Clients receiving starter packs

· Donors

· Customers requiring delivery of goods

All members of the van crew represent the Charity to donors, customers and service users. Often they are coming into contact with people at a time when they are vulnerable and/or dealing with difficult personal circumstances (e.g. recent homelessness or house clearance following a bereavement). It is essential that job holders are always respectful, sensitive to the potential circumstances of those using the service and act at all times as ambassadors for the Charity.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Assist the Van Driver to ensure that Starter Packs are delivered in a timely and efficient manner at the agreed times to clients.

· Provide exemplary customer service to donors, customers and clients receiving starter pack.

· Load van to ensure packs are easily accessible in line with delivery schedule.

· Assist the Van Driver in communicating with customers for their deliveries and collections, telephoning or texting clients in advance to arrange or confirm pack delivery times.

· Loading and unloading furniture and other heavy/bulk items donated to the Charity.

· Packing the van to ensure best use of space and minimise the number of journeys required.

· Assist in moving goods around the organisation in line with requests from Retail Staff and delivering purchases of large items to customers as quickly as practical to maximise sales revenue within the shops.

· Assist in keeping the back shop and stockroom tidy and organised.

· Disposal of donations with no resale value in line with the Charity’s policies.

· Ensure that all duties are carried out following health and safety guidelines and procedures, particularly those that apply to manual handling when lifting heavy items.

· Provide cover for Retail Assistants in the Charity’s shops and Pack Assistants if required.

· Undertake any other duties or tasks which may be reasonably considered within the remit of the post.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ROLE

· The majority of the working day will be spent in the Charity’s vans, away from the office and shops.

· Heavy lifting is an integral part of this role.

· Deliveries and collections may require carrying items (including heavy items) up several flights of stairs.

· Working on the van team will involve exposure to inclement weather, particularly during the winter months.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE and BEHAVIOURS

ESSENTIAL

· Good communications skills

· Good team working skills

· Appreciation of good customer service

· Able to cope with the physical demands of the role

· Pleasant telephone manner

PREFERRED

· Previous stockroom, warehousing and/or delivery experience

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 4 weeks

Salary: £5.28-£10.42 per hour

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekend availability

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • Glasgow: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)
