We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Urban Drainage Modeller to join our Water Environment Department in Leeds. You will join a growing team of modellers, engineers and GIS specialists who specialise in providing consultancy advice, design and hydraulic modelling services for all aspects of urban drainage and infrastructure.
At Sweco we work for a range of different clients both within and outside the regulated UK water industry. We are looking for individuals who are able to challenge conventional thinking and work collaboratively to meet a wide range of business, environment and regulatory challenges for these clients. The role offers an opportunity for successful candidates to broaden and diversify their hydraulic modelling expertise.
You will work with senior personnel who are respected experts in their fields, supporting on areas such as:
- Wastewater Hydraulic Modelling
- Integrated Urban Drainage Modelling
- Resilience and Strategic Planning Studies
- Sustainable Drainage and Surface Water Management Studies
On the job training and support is provided by senior personnel who are respected experts in their fields. Sweco also offers approved training agreements with numerous professional institutions. What does the role involve?
You'll develop a wide range of skills depending also on your background and interests including hydraulic modelling, flood risk assessment, sustainable drainage, GIS, solution development, and schematic, outline and detailed design.
It will involve:
- Innovative thinking, ready to challenge the norm, and helping us all deliver better solutions for our clients

- Bringing together ideas and expertise from multi-disciplinary teams
- Supporting strong ongoing client relationships
- Contributing to a supportive team environment with active involvement in mentoring and professional development (of self and others).
- Leading small projects under the supervision of senior staff
- Production of client facing documents and technical deliverables
- Preparing technical reports and other deliverables
- Work in a supervised environment to deliver project activities to budget and programme
- Data handling and analysis of large datasets
- Survey planning and supervision
- Client and stakeholder engagement and management
The role will involve the use of hydraulic models (mainly ICM) to assess the operation of existing assets and undertake the outline design of proposed schemes. The role would suite someone who has some engineering design experience and wishes to enhance this by developing their hydraulic modelling skills OR someone with hydraulic modelling experience who wishes to develop their engineering skills.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:
- Previous water consultancy experience. Some engineering design experience or hydraulic modelling experience is desirable.
- A degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography or a related discipline with significant engineering, hydraulics or GIS content.
- A strong interest in the water environment and an understanding of the issues associated to sustainability and climate change adaptation.
- Experience of GIS (e.g. ArcGIS or Mapinfo) is essential and hydraulic modelling software (e.g. Infoworks ICM) is desirable.
- A commitment to continuous professional development and becoming a chartered professional
- Good problem solving/contingency planning skills with ability to find quick, innovative and practical solutions to problems.
- Excellent literacy, communication, analytical and numeracy skills
