The role
The University is seeking to appoint people to join our pool of examination invigilators. Successful candidates will be responsible for ensuring the smooth-running of examinations, mainly held in January and May of each year, in a variety of settings in accordance with established University examination procedures.

University Examination Invigilators are responsible for the supervision and running of university examinations in the main examination venues and also online examinations in some of the larger computer rooms. A range of duties are associated with the general conduct of the examinations, and with specific aspects of the examination process.
Co-operative working with other examination staff is at the absolute core of this job role, focussing also on an ability to react quickly, appropriately and sympathetically to situations that may arise in examination venues. An assured but sympathetic manner is vital in dealing with students under stress.
New appointees must attend induction sessions and may not invigilate until these have been undertaken.
All University Examination Invigilators are responsible ultimately to the Assistant Registrar (Examinations), but to the Assistant Superintendent of Examinations in charge of their allocated main examination venue for each morning or afternoon examination session.
Half-day examination sessions allocated to Examination Invigilators will be determined and offered to each Invigilator in advance.
Attendance must normally start at least 20 minutes in advance of each half-day session, and will end as indicated by the appropriate Assistant Superintendent of Examinations, but in most cases this will be approximately 45 minutes after the end of the longest examination in the venue in question. Work time sheets must be checked and signed each half-day by the Assistant Superintendent of Examinations.
The main duties and responsibilities include:
- Laying out examination papers.
- Supervising student entry to the examination hall.
- Possibly making start and end announcements, bilingually.
- Collecting attendance slips.
- Checking attendance slips against class lists. Completing relevant examination forms.
- Exercising general supervision, under the guidance of the Assistant Superintendent.
- Being vigilant at all times. Observing examinees. Invigilating actively.
- Circulating regularly in venue, but quietly.
- Responding to queries or requests from examinees.
- Being aware of possible cases of Unacceptable Academic Practice. Taking action as appropriate and as instructed and completing relevant documentation.
- Bearing in mind prohibitions for students, such as any books, papers, materials or equipment other than those specified in examination paper rubrics. This includes personal dictionaries and all forms of small electronic device, unpermitted calculators, mobile telephones, smart watches and Bluetooth accessories.
- Monitoring permitted food and drink, removing items as necessary.
- Collecting in completed scripts.
- Checking the number of scripts against numbers of candidates.
- Completing relevant examination documentation.
- Preparing examination script collection boxes.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills required:
Essential
- Educated to A Level (or equivalent) or have equivalent work experience.
- Experience of working effectively within a team to achieve shared objectives.
- Experience of performing administrative tasks.
- Familiarity with examination processes and procedures with ability to actively enforce examination rules.
- An ability to work with students who may be under stress and respond to situations efficiently and effectively.
- An ability to handle sensitive documents in a professional and confidential manner.
- Excellent face to face communication skills in order to receive, understand and convey information.
- Able to work flexibly to meet business needs.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level A0. An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
Desirable
- Previous experience of exam invigilation in a higher education setting.
- Previous experience of supervising or monitoring the work of others.
- Familiarity with higher education examination processes and procedures with ability to actively enforce examination rules.
- First Aid Training or willingness to attend training.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B2.
