Background

The post-holders will provide counselling to students who present to the service with emotional and psychological difficulties. They will be skilled in conducting thorough assessments to identify presenting issues, risk and suitability for time-limited counselling. Post-holders will be expected to be on campus 60% of their time.

Responsibilities

You will make clinically informed judgements regarding vulnerable students who require immediate at risk management, onward GP or psychiatric referral when appropriate or referral to the in-house mental health team. You will be skilled and experienced in offering brief therapeutic interventions.

You will contribute towards mental-health and wellbeing awareness training programmes and workshops, and liaise with the Schools in the area of risk management and support, offering guidance to staff on student case management.

Person Specification

You will be a qualified and accredited counsellor with significant experience in time-limited integrative counselling within a University counselling service. You will have experience of working with a wide range of mental health issues, and be able to work effectively with all stakeholders. You will be culturally competent; understanding the impact of academia on mental health.

High levels of initiative and judgment are required, along with excellent communication skills and the ability to manage complex student presentations in a busy service. Collaborative working relationships across the service are required along with a good understanding of the intersectionality between emotional difficulties, mental health, other disabilities and specific learning differences (SpLDs).
