SALARY RANGE: £19,200

LOCATION: Southampton

ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES

What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?

The role holder will manage several key science activities and projects, to support the development of new technologies to be developed into future products. The role holder will also be responsible for scoping and designing scientific studies, execution of testing, analysis, and interpretation of data to provide recommendations to internal stakeholders.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

Within New Categories R&D, the Applied Science team is one of the key teams responsible for delivering the enabling science to support new product developments. By providing scientific support for individual, new to world technologies, the aim is to develop well characterised technologies that will progress through the product development process. In addition, the Applied Science team are tasked with investigating how product design influences the aerosol chemistry of New Category products.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

You will be responsible for managing scientific studies to test individual new technologies that will be developed into future products. You will design, plan and execute these studies (using both internal and third-party laboratories), analyse and interpret data output and report recommendations back to key stakeholders. A key aspect of the work is aimed at generating a fundamental understanding of how key product design parameters of new technologies impact the emissions profiles from new category products.

  • Managing projects / key activities (timelines and deliverables) for both internal and external partners;
  • Literature research;
  • Defining study approach;
  • Designing experiments;
  • Conducting / commissioning experiments;
  • Interpreting data (collating, analysing and statistically evaluating data);
  • Preparing for technical reviews;
  • Writing reports and presentations on key findings, outcomes, and recommendations.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • General laboratory skills and attention to detail;
  • The ability to design and conduct experiments and investigate science from first principles;
  • Critical evaluation of data;
  • Experience in writing scientific reports;
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a physical science related discipline.

  • Project and time management skills which can be transferred to an R&D environment;
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis approaches.
