The role
The Department of Information Services (IS) wish to appoint a UI/UX Designer to join the Applications and Development Section in IS. The role will report to the Digital Transformation Manager. This post could be offered as a secondment opportunity and can be offered as a remote/hybrid opportunity.
The Applications and Development Section are primarily responsible for the development and support of applications used by the administrative processes of the University. These include the Student Records system, Accommodation and Admissions systems. The team also support commercial software, running the University’s Finance, HR and Payroll systems, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. These applications are running on Windows VM servers and are sitting on Oracle databases. In-house development for the AStRA (Aberystwyth Student Records and Admissions) System uses SQL, PHP, HTML and Perl programmes alongside Oracle development tools. The system offers web interfaces for staff and students to access and maintain student and accommodation records.
Normal hours of work are 8:30 to 17:00, with some flexibility possible. On occasions, the
post holder may be required to work outside of these hours.

What you’ll do
This job description is subject to review and amendment in the light of the changing needs of the University, to provide appropriate development opportunities and/or the addition of any other reasonable duties.
Informal training will be provided through working with existing members of the Development team, and through the use of systems manuals and online training materials. No prior knowledge of Oracle development tools is required.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Turn research findings into design concepts using various formats, including sketches, wireframes and UI designs.
- Present research findings, designs and their rationale to a variety of stakeholders
- Lead workshops with clients and users
- Working to agreed standard operation procedures and industry standards to extend the functionality of existing services or develop new services. This will include a range of activities across the development cycle including technical design, development and configuration, and defect resolution and deployment.
- Providing expert advice and guidance to influence and shape system developments and enhancements that represent best value for customers and will meet agreed expectations.
- Responsible for effectively planning and allocating your own time, and the time of others when appropriate, to ensure efficient deployment of resources, planning and prioritising work in line with the aims, objectives and priorities of the wider IS Service
- Supporting the ongoing development of Standard Operating Procedures and continual service improvement, including ongoing development of knowledge base articles and artefacts
- Responsible for undertaking peer review of work to ensure consistency and quality of work
- To work closely with and contribute to future Information Technology system development with the Digital Transformation Managers.
- Carry our regular reviews of systems, identifying areas for improvement through data analysis. Carry out regular market research to ensure analysis is to benefit of the business.
- Undertake research of literature and internet investigations to seek solutions to technical problems and keep up to date with developments in software and techniques.
- To continuously develop and maintain appropriate knowledge, skills, and expertise in order to fulfil the requirements of the role.
- Responsible for producing documentation to support application developments.
- Contribute to decisions made around support, maintenance, improvement, and development of business applications to improve service delivery.
- Ensure all systems are managed in conjunction with Aberystwyth University policy and procedure, the Digital Strategy and GDPR.
- To undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post.

Who you are – Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, and Skills required:
Essential
- Degree or equivalent qualification in a subject relevant to the post or comparable relevant experience.
- Demonstrable UI design skills, backed by a strong portfolio of works
- Extensive experience of designing user interfaces for web applications, using a range of technologies such as Adobe Creative Suite and Sketch.
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Knowledge of GDPR and other data protection procedures relating to the storage, retention, and use of personal data.
- Experience of working with design systems.
- Excellent collaboration and problem-solving skills and the ability to work on a variety of projects across teams.
- Ability to work independently and flexibly, balancing priorities and a varied workload, paying good attention to detail. Ability to work under pressure.
- Good interpersonal skills in dealing with students and staff.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills and an ability to use them effectively in an IS environment.
- Ability to learn new skills quickly and understand and explain complex information to a varied audience.
- An ability to understand the bilingual nature of the University and an awareness of the procedures in place to support working bilingually.
Desirable
- Qualified by experience in developing and analysing Business Information Systems / databases.
- Experience of administrative computing systems in a Higher Education environment.
- Experience of working in an Agile environment such as Scrum.
- Oral (spoken) and Written Welsh Level B1.*
