The Laboratory Medicine Service is spread across four hospital sites within Swansea Bay University Health Board. We are set up as a hub and spoke network of laboratories with the hub laboratory based in Morriston Hospital and spoke laboratories at Singleton Hospital (7 miles from Morriston) and Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend (25 miles from Morriston).
The laboratories are extremely well equipped with Roche, Sysmex and Ortho analysers, and have full accreditation with UKAS, MHRA and IBMS training status.
Fully qualified Senior / Section Manager Biomedical Scientist (BMS) Band 7 - Only candidates that have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Diploma or relevant equivalent experience and hold an appropriate and relevant Masters or level 7 qualification will be considered for the full Section Manager band 7 post. This must be clearly indicated on your application form.
Trainee Senior / Section Manager (BMS) - Applicants who do not hold the full qualifications will be considered for a trainee position and will be subject to Annex 21 of Band 7. It is a condition of appointment to the training position that the required qualifications are achieved. Where situations arise that post holders fail to achieve the required qualifications in the designated timeframes, the service may look to redeploy individuals.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified dynamic Biomedical scientist to become a Transfusion Specialist Section Manager for Swansea Bay University Health Board, Laboratory Medicine Service
As the Transfusion Specialist Section Manager for Laboratory Medicine you will be responsible for supervising all transfusion sections across the network; managing the daily operation of transfusion; dealing with engineering visits and organising the sites around any planned and unplanned analytical down time; monitoring internal and external quality-control and any remedial action required; and incident investigation to ensure MHRA and ISO: 15189 compliance. You will also deputise for the Transfusion Laboratory Manager in their absence, so a good knowledge of both routine and specialist Blood Transfusion is required.
The Blood transfusion network supports the varied clinical services at each hospital site with Morriston Hospital supporting areas such as Major Trauma and Singleton Hospital supporting Clinical Haematology and Obstetrics. Across the network we process approximately 60,000 group and save samples annually.
As a member of the wider Laboratory Medicine Management Team you will also be required to implement policies for service improvement and propose policy changes that may impact beyond own area.

It has one of the busiest emergency departments (A&E) in Wales, and hosts the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service Cymru (EMRTS) which carries blood products.
Singleton Hospital, in the amazing Swansea Bay, has 330 beds and provides a regional midwifery service with neonatal intensive care beds. In addition the West Wales Cancer centre and chemotherapy day units are housed on the Singleton site. Bone marrow transplants are supported here by the clinical haematology service.
Neath Port Talbot Hospital provides a range of inpatient, outpatient and day case services, including specialist services in neuro-rehabilitation, elective orthopaedic surgery.
