THE ROLE
The Guarantee & Wholesale Solutions team within the British Business Bank originates, structures and manages transactions that directly support lending to UK SMEs. This opportunity will allow you to gain a unique view of the SME market through the lens of the UK Government’s development bank, dedicated to making finance markets work better for smaller businesses. The team executes transactions with SME lenders such as banks and non-bank financial institutions, which seek to address the funding, security and capital constraints these entities may face that prevent them from increasing their credit activity in the small business sector.
In this position you will support the execution of the Guarantee & Wholesale suite of products, gaining exposure to securitisations, structured finance and other, similar, capital market instruments. This will include getting involved in all facets of a transaction as well as the opportunity to take on substantial responsibility – which will include structuring the deal, financial modelling and market and regulatory research. This role will enable the successful applicant to gain a strong grounding in debt capital markets transactions through a rotational development programme, providing experience in multiple product teams. You will closely collaborate with SME lender counterparties, legal and accounting advisors and internal risk and operations teams, and develop strong working relationships with colleagues across the British Business Bank.
Key aspects of the role will include:
- Transaction due diligence and execution, to include pricing and term negotiation, financial modelling and review of legal documentation;
- Financial analysis of lender counterparties and their SME credit portfolios;
- Writing (and ultimately presenting) credit proposals for senior committee members and supporting internal approval processes; and
- Undertaking market and regulatory research.
This is a fantastic development opportunity where you will get:
- An unparalleled view into the UK financial sector through our extensive range of delivery partners;
- Valuable financial markets knowledge on various asset classes and types of lending;
- Development of relationships with senior management, both internally and through partner institutions;
- Hands-on experience and early responsibility in a (small) supportive team; and
- Full financial sponsorship towards professional qualifications such as CFA.
As a recent university graduate, in a quantitative discipline such as Mathematics, Economics, Physics or Engineering, (or equivalent experience) you will also be able to demonstrate the following:
- Excellent quantitative and analytical skills
- Excellent written and spoken communication abilities;
- Ability to work unsupervised and under pressure;
- Ability to produce high quality written presentation materials (Excel, PowerPoint, Word);
- Ability to prioritise and to work to deadlines;
- Sensitivity to detail and accuracy in everyday work;
- Demonstrably proactive, self-motivated, and professional, with the ability to work well in a team environment and on an individual basis; and
- Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to think creatively.
You will ideally have knowledge of VBA alongside a genuine interest in the SME finance marketplace.
Please note that analysts will be required to attend the office (London or Sheffield) 3 days a week, to benefit personally and professionally from being present in a collaborative working environment.
