Introduction
DB Cargo UK is the UK’s largest rail freight company. We operate trains across the UK transporting everything from cereals to coal, barbecues to biomass, and petroleum to steel.
We provide freight, infrastructure and passenger charter trains throughout the UK, and freight services to and from mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel. We also provide traction and train crew for scheduled passenger operators.
Essential requirements for our Trainee Train Driver
Be at least 21 years of age
Have completed at least 9 years education (primary and secondary)
Hold a GCSE grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent)
Live within a 1 hour radius of your closest hub
Pass a psychometric assessment
Pass a relevant Medical including Drug and Alcohol testing conducted via an approved provider.
Have a good understanding of English to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) established by the Council of Europe.
Hold a full UK current and valid road vehicle driving license (for manual vehicles)
You must not have taken and failed the Train Driver assessment within the last 6 months
You must not have taken and failed the Train Driver assessment twice before.

Junior/Trainee Driver
This role is a key part of our future growth plans and the talent pool provides you with an opportunity to register your interest in developing a career within us. We’re seeking to build a diverse and accomplished Junior Driver talent pool in readiness to support increased business levels and future growth.
As a Trainee Driver, you would;
Be Train driving within a designated Yard or Terminal, achieving the European Train Driving License Part A certification
Become competent in location safe methods
Be fully compliant and understand the Train Driver Rules
Be responsible for all Freight Train Working Regulations, Personal Track Safety and Traction Knowledge
Carry out all locomotive preparation
Undertake Locomotive Fuelling
Conduct basic Locomotive Fault Finding
Control train movements from the ground and the locomotive
Successful candidates would work an average of 32 hours each week on an annualised hours basis. We operate 24/7, 365 days a year and so shift patterns would cover unsocial hours including nights, weekends and holiday periods.

We offer our Junior/Trainee Drivers a competitive salary of £31,381 per annum.

The recruitment process will involve several stages. Firstly, we will complete an initial review of all applications to ensure they meet all the above requirements. Those who are successful will then be invited to an assessment day.
Attendance at the assessment centre in Doncaster will be mandatory and applicants will need to be able to fund their own travel on this day. Those who are successful at the assessment centre will all be invited to a management interview.
The final stage of the selection process will be to pass a safety critical medical, with an external provider. This may also involve travel to a different region. Candidates who reach the medical stage may be reimbursed for travel costs dependent on their method of travel.
Dependent on business needs and hub location, a number of successful candidates will be allocated a start date on a training course which are planned to run on a monthly basis.
All other successful candidates will be held in a talent pool, to be called on in line with business requirements. Candidates may be held in the talent pool for 12 months or more.
