An exciting opportunity to train as a solicitor in a busy in-house Legal department which deals with an exceptional range of work across a number of disciplines.

Transport for London (TfL) is part of the Greater London Authority family led by the Mayor of London. TfL is the integrated transport authority responsible for delivering public transport across London. TfL is a large organisation with approximately 28,000 employees and plays a key role in shaping what life is like in London and helping to create a safer, fairer, greener, healthier and more prosperous city.

TfL runs most of London’s public transport services, including London Underground, London Buses, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, Elizabeth line, London Trams, London River Services, London Dial-a-Ride, Victoria Coach Station, Santander Cycles and the London Cable Car. The experience, reliability and accessibility of these services is fundamental to Londoners’ quality of life. TfL also manages the city’s red route strategic roads and, through collaboration with the London boroughs, TfL is helping to shape the character of all London’s streets.

TfL is committed to being an employer that is fully representative of the community it serves, where everyone can realise their potential.

The delivery of TfL’s services requires the support of a Legal function which covers a wide range of legal disciplines. As a trainee solicitor at TfL, you will undergo comprehensive, ongoing training and have the opportunity to work on exciting and innovative projects. You will also have the chance to work with other key London agencies that TfL provides legal services to, such as the Greater London Authority, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, the Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation and the London Legacy Development Corporation.

Your training will include a seat in each of the following teams:

Commercial Law
Focussing on procurement and commercial contracts, including major construction, engineering and information technology projects

Property and Planning Law
Dealing with major developments, operational and commercial property and major regeneration projects

Public Law
Advising on a wide range of public law, regulatory and enforcement issues, judicial review proceedings and promoting legislative change

Employment Law
Advising on all aspects of the employment lifecycle from recruitment to retirement, as well as advising on policy, business restructuring and change and industrial relations

Commercial Disputes Resolution
Dealing with contentious matters arising from all aspects of TfL activities, ranging from large commercial contracts, construction and engineering disputes to protection of trademarks.

You will have completed your LPC and been awarded a minimum of a Commendation prior to the proposed contract start date in Autumn 2023 and have strong academic ability, including a minimum 2.1 degree classification.

In addition, you will have a demonstrable, analytical yet flexible approach to problem solving.

In return, you can expect a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package, including 30 days’ leave, free travel on TfL services and private healthcare. As a fixed term contractor we can offer you a choice of pension arrangements. If you choose not to take our final salary pension scheme you will be paid an allowance on top of your salary, subject to Tax and National Insurance. We will share all the details with you at offer stage and the choice will be yours based on your circumstances. Depending on what you choose you can add up-to 14% to your salary.
