An exciting opportunity has arisen for existing Healthcare Support Workers or NHS employees to undertake an innovative Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) programme which will be delivered over two years, by the University of the West of Scotland.

ODPs are members of the multi-disciplinary theatre team involved with the overall planning and delivery of perioperative care. ODPs are mainly employed in surgical operating departments in the roles of anaesthetic, scrub practitioner and recovery practitioners.

The Dip HE ODP programme is undertaken online and will be accessed from a range of perioperative settings within NHS Western Isles and NHS Grampian. It is an ideal opportunity to undertake work based experiential and reflective learning whilst being employed.

During the two year programme you will be paid a percentage of a band 5 rate (70% in first year & 75% in second year).

Your work will be assessed in a variety of specialist areas such as General surgery; Paediatrics, Orthopaedics; Ear, Nose and Throat; Obs and Gynae, Neuro, Plastics, Anaesthetics and recovery. There will also be practical experience in emergency theatres.

Successful candidates will be expected to travel for placements to Aberdeen for more intensive exposure to certain specialities.

The Diploma of Higher Education in Operating Department Practice, cohort 2023 will commence on 28th August 2023 and is a blend of practical placements, along with online and taught education.

Successful completion of the programme will lead to professional registration with the Health and Care Professions Council and a job offer as a Band 5 ODP with NHS Western Isles.

Interviews will be held in the Western Isles Hospital site.
