As a Trainee Engineer working on market leading, world class products you will primarily support the activities associated with component and assembly design for our Compact Wheel Loaders whilst completing your engineering qualifications to degree level.
You will contribute to every stage of the current product improvement and new product introduction processes, including requirements capture, design, development and validation. You will demonstrate a sense of urgency and determination to investigate and resolve design, build and test issues.
You will join the global technical team responsible for new product designs for next generation Compact Wheel Loaders located within the Building Construction Products Division in Desford, UK.
The formal qualification will be funded by Caterpillar and delivered externally via a college/university over a 4-year period. When Level 6 apprenticeship which is a degree level qualification is completed, the individual can expect to become an Associate Engineer.
Throughout this training Caterpillar would also encourage and fund the individual to become a Chartered Engineer.
What you will do:
- Concept through to detailed design of new solutions which are validated to meet functional and technical requirements.
- Active participation in design reviews and Failure Modes & Effects Analysis (FMEA) sessions.
- Collaboration with global teams and suppliers to deliver new designs to production which meet manufacturing, assembly, cost and quality requirements.
- Investigation and development of solutions to issues arising from build and validation.
- Working with technical resources and suppliers to implement design changes.
- Management of engineering changes through life cycle management.

Required qualifications:
- Three A Level qualifications at grade C or above (or equivalent) in Maths and at least one further STEM subject, such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Design & Technology OR Merit/Merit/Merit profile in a Level 3 Diploma or an Extended Diploma in Engineering or a related subject.
- GCSEs at grade C or above in Maths and English.
- Basic working knowledge of solid modelling (ideally CREO).
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications with fundamental basics of Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to self-start tasks.
- Ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
Top candidates will also have:
- Experience in design and development of components and systems, such as hydraulic lines and light fabrications.
- Experience operating mobile construction equipment.

NOTE: You will need to be able to travel to college/university. This may require you to have a driving license and access to a vehicle, however, public transportation is also available.
