It is an exciting time to be joining Public Health Wales Microbiology as we have dramatically expanded our workforce and the way Microbiology services are delivered. Public Health Wales Microbiology consists of a network of laboratories currently based at 7 sites across Wales.

You will join our COVID team working in the hot lab at Morriston hospital working a 7-day rota. You will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of Microbiology in Wales following significant investment in new technology and staff. We aim to provide a responsive, modern, rapid diagnostic service for the people of Wales using state of the art equipment.

To demonstrate our commitment and dedication of our staff we offer automatic progression to Band 6 on the successful completion of their IBMS Specialist Diploma (Medical Microbiology /Virology)with 100% compliance of statutory and mandatory training and relevant competency documents.

An understanding of good laboratory practice and ISO15189 quality management is desirable.

The post holder will be expected to participate in shift working, including out of hours, weekends and bank holidays, to provide a 7-day service.

The post holder works as a Biomedical Scientist and contributes to service delivery under the supervision of Senior Biomedical Scientists. Some rotation of duties will be required according to training needs and the operational requirements of the laboratory.

To undertake aspects of diagnostic laboratory work using manual and automated methods/technology.

To achieve and demonstrate a level of practical ability and academic knowledge sufficient to satisfy and maintain the requirements of professional registration as a Biomedical Scientist.

The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, where appropriate liaising with medical staff, other laboratory staff, hospital/Trust staff, customers and members of the public.

Public Health Wales Microbiology is part of an all-Wales Microbiology network that provides support for Health Protection across Wales. As such you could be required at short notice to respond to public health emergencies, including outbreaks and other emergency situations. In addition, you will be required to support the provision of a 24 hour service at agreed rates of remuneration.
