Job description

Some careers have more impact than others.

If you’re looking for a role where you can continue to make an impression, take the next step at HSBC where your contributions will always be valued.

HSBC Global Banking and Markets is an emerging markets-led, financing-focused business that provides investment and financial solutions. Through our international network, we connect emerging and mature markets, covering key growth areas. We partner with our corporate, government and institutional clients to help them achieve consistent, long-term performance.

The Statutory Reporting, Life Fund Accounting and Investment Trust Reporting activities we undertake for our clients have recently been brought together under a single Financial Reporting team. The UK team (of c 35 FTE) is supported by a larger team of accountants and finance support colleagues in our offshore Global Service Centres (GSC).

The business is embarking on an ambitious and exciting strategy, with ambitious growth plans underpinned by a significant investment in systems, infrastructure and evolving working practices that will enhance our client proposition. To support this agenda, we are looking to build a team of colleagues that can demonstrate a strong track record of diligent and high-quality delivery and a strong appetite to drive improvement and embrace positive change.

We are currently seeking a professional to join our team in the role of: Trainee Accountant.

The primary objective of the role is to support the delivery of monthly, quarterly, 6 monthly and annual accounts and outputs for Investment Funds, Pension Funds and Investment Trusts. Outputs must be delivered in line with agreed contractual service levels – on time and to a high standard of quality. The outputs form the basis of statutory accounts and regulatory returns compiled by our clients.

This opportunity will suit someone starting out on their professional career who has an appetite to progress through their accounting exams (we will provide funding & study support including study leave to pursue ACCA qualification) and build a cornerstone of fund accounting experience for a successful career in Finance.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Oversight and review of the monthly control process to ensure that all key data is captured, fully reconciled and in a correct format to enable client report deliverables by set deadlines.
  • Manage, control and review your own workload to ensure that all deliverables are reviewed by agreed deadlines and items are processed on time, accurately and within the requirements of the regulations
  • Attendance and participation in client and internal stakeholder meetings with regards to issues and performance. Ensure any issues have steps put in place to avoid recurrence
  • Work in partnership with ‘upstream’ functions (e.g. Transaction Management, Reconciliations, A&V) to resolve any emerging issues and drive improvements to the framework
  • Support strategic, operational and regulatory change initiatives for clients and for HSBC, ensuring continuity and achievement of client commitments
  • Make a meaningful personal contribution to the culture of the Financial Reporting function, taking personal ownership for the methods and activities that will make it a great place to work, collaborate and thrive
Requirements

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • A Finance / Business related degree that provides a strong and relevant academic backdrop for the role with an understanding of investment accounting and/or fund administration
  • Willingness to study for a professional accountancy qualification
  • Candidates will possess solid organisational and communication skills, being confident in their approach, with the ability to work and deliver at pace and be comfortable in managing conflicting priorities
  • IT skills and abilities, experience using Excel Workbooks and Macros
  • An appetite to drive a positive and collegiate culture

The role has a hybrid working pattern allowing for home based and office based working out of HSBC offices in Edinburgh.

The role holder will ensure the HSBC values are present in everything they do, both individually and as an organisation. This will be achieved by consistently displaying the behaviours of: Dependable and do the right thing, Open to different ideas and cultures, Connected to customers, communities, regulators and each other.

You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
