We are looking for a motivated, organised and reliable individual to support the Musculoskeletal Therapy (MSK) Outpatient Team at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.

Physiotherapy Apprentice is a developmental role within the Therapies Directorate at the RNOH. Your job will be to support the MSK team with the delivery of the service whilst completing a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship qualification to become a registered Physiotherapist.

The MSK team is a friendly supportive team of experienced physiotherapists who see a wide range of adults with musculoskeletal conditions or who have had orthopaedic surgery. The role is varied and interesting and will be key in supporting their work and improving the strength, fitness and quality of life of this patient group.

In any given day you could be:

  • Delivering one-to-one and group exercise and rehabilitation treatment programmes in land, gym and water environments
  • Assisting patients to follow exercise programmes designed by physiotherapists
  • Delivering aspects of therapy intervention with patients undergoing routine surgeries, including the issue of adaptive equipment / mobility aids and techniques for managing activities of daily living.
  • Assisting in identifying and problem-solving patients’ requirements for adaptive equipment and devices, including the production and adaptation of such devices as appropriate.
  • Ensuring that stock is maintained and equipment is clean and safe
  • Assess for potential barriers to individuals leading active lifestyles and delivering patient health promotion and advice
  • Assisting patients to set physical activity related goals
Applicants must be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills in order to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, relatives and staff, as well as a good standard of written English.

The RNOH is a national centre of excellence with an international reputation for diagnosis, assessment and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.

This ranges from the most acute spinal cord injury, bone tumour and complex joint reconstruction to orthopaedic and specialist rehabilitation. It offers an integrated range of clinical, teaching and research services unique within the UK and in partnership with University College London.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join the Therapy Department at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust (RNOH).

You will be supporting Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists who provide a wide range of rehabilitation programmes for people with complex chronic musculoskeletal pain problems, hypermobility and rheumatological conditions.

To accept patients referred by a Therapist, and carry as own patient caseload. Treat patients according to set treatment protocols, monitoring patient progression, using investigative and analytical skills make alterations (within protocols and scope of practice) to patient treatment programmes as required.

Assess routine non-complex patients as 1st point of contact within agreed patient pathways

Support physiotherapists in delivering exercise, education and water based classes.

Work unsupervised regularly, reporting patient progress and informing the therapist of any problems.

To use clinical reasoning, and utilise a range of assessment and treatment skills and options to formulate treatment programmes.

To monitor and initiate the order of specialist materials and equipment required. Assess for walking aids and appliances such as knee splints.

To deliver individual consultations to identify barriers to leading an active lifestyle and facilitating an individual to set realistic goals.

To help develop web-based and patient information materials.

To maintain accurate patient records.

To identify barriers to an active lifestyle (for example, associated medical conditions, lack of access to affordable opportunities for physical activity, lack of information or resources) and how these might be addressed. Introduction of different exercise groups (Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi etc) to promote a health and well-being culture.
