Job description
Founded in 1677, as one of the oldest state schools in the country The John Roan School has a distinguished history of supporting educational excellence for the young people of Greenwich.
We believe that education should be a positive and transformational experience, regardless of ability or background. We are fully committed to raising achievement for everyone and have the highest expectations of all our students in every aspect of school life. Our vision is for students to be the best that they can be, and our role is to provide them with the platform to achieve this.
At The John Roan School, we pledge to provide a rich, broad and varied education such that all students are able to make excellent progress whatever their starting points. In the seven years that students grow and develop with the school, they will experience a diverse curriculum and enrichment programme that stretches them academically and socially.
We have a split site, with a new, state-of-the-art building at Westcombe Park and a dedicated sixth-form centre on the historic Maze Hill site. Students at The John Roan School also benefit from access to Braithwaite’, an activity centre in the Lake District and extensive playing fields and sports facilities, as part of our commitment to providing an education with character.
Role: Librarian
Salary: £31.933. Actual pa (£37,178 FTE pa)
Hours: 37.5 hrs, 39 weeks per yr
Application closing date: Monday 17th April - Midday
Interview date: WC 24th April
The Role:
The library is the heart of the school’s learning community, with the potential to have a great impact on the educational outcomes of young people. As the librarian at The John Roan School your main purpose will be to manage, develop, and promote a love of reading within the library. In addition, we see a key role of the librarian to drive the improvement of literacy across the school by working with the inclusion team to develop the reading skills of specific groups of children.
The library sits right in the centre of the main school building, representing the central role it plays in life at the school. Students use the library keenly during break and lunchtimes, while various projects and initiatives at the school and in our local community are run through the work of student ‘community librarians’. There is also a further library in the Sixth Form building at Maze Hill, providing more academic texts for post-sixteen learners as well as a study space for them to work in.
About You
We are enthusiastic about the role that the librarian at the school will have in fostering that love of reading for all students as well as developing literacy for key groups and students.
We are looking for a passionate, enterprising candidate who will continue the work of the previous librarian as well as taking initiative in developing the massive potential of the library within the school.
The John Roan School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Therefore this appointment will be subject to vetting, including online checks and enhanced DBS disclosure.
