The Role
The role of Test Engineering Lead (Automation & Tooling) is a leadership engineering position, with a focus on implementing our strategy across self-managed teams, for leading on improvement initiatives and coaching and for driving standards, technology and innovation across the test engineering function and within value streams and platforms. You will:
- Pro-actively contribute towards our Agile test engineering and automation strategy, as well as our engineering principles, practices, and standards.
- Deliver as part of the test engineering leadership team and Centre of Expertise to suggest, implement and effect change on tooling, processes, practices and raising awareness across key initiatives to deliver our test engineering transformation strategy.
- Implement improvements to our Tesco Bank Unified Test Framework to meet the test automation requirements of our value streams and our automation and tooling roadmap.
- Deploy and lead automation engineers within systems teams to deliver end to end testing using automated and exploratory approaches.
- Participate in the innovation and continuous improvement process to meet the changing demands of the business and emerging industry trends and standards.
- Recruitment and line management of senior test engineers.
- Collaborate with the value streams and platform teams to promote enterprise shift-left techniques and provide risk assessment to determine test types required and automation approach.
- Initiate and lead strategic quality initiatives within our engineering function.
- Provide leadership and guidance to teams, coaching and mentoring team members to aid continuous improvement.
- Work with teams across multiple locations to align with our Test and Automation Strategies and coach team members in required processes and techniques.
- Contribute to resource management and capacity planning to support delivery schedule.
- Work effectively within the department troubleshooting and resolving business critical challenges.
What you’ll bring
- Experience of delivering in agile environment with a focus on embedding a continuous testing approach into the SDLC.
- An ability to convert thought leadership on continuous testing into deployable solutions and processes to improve the Tesco Bank Test and Quality Assurance Practice.
- Extensive experience defining and owning the delivery of test engineering and automation strategy and capability in medium to large organisations.

Demonstrable experience and understanding of defining and implementing automation frameworks that are maintainable, extendable and can exercise UI and subcutaneous layers of solutions under test on web, mobile and client install solutions using tools including but not limited to;
- UI - Selenium (or Cypress.IO or Playwright)
- API – Rest Assured (Postman or Soap UI)
- Mobile - Appium
- Test Development – Cucumber, Gherkin (BDD)
- Languages – Java or JavaScript
- Containerisation – Docker
- Web Services - AWS
- Continuous Integration – Jenkins
- SCM - Git
- A clear view of how to train and enhance the skills of our people to deliver in a continuous testing model
- Strong leadership in challenging situations
