An opportunity has become available for a Network Management Centre Engineer based in the Telecoms Network Management Centre in Taunton. The successful candidate will report to the Telecoms NMC & Projects Team Manager and will be required to provide front line operational support within the National Grid Telecoms Network Management Centre, liaising with field based engineers, customers and contractors. As you can imagine, the pace is fast, and if you join us, our customers will trust you to provide excellent service and minimise any impact.
Main ResponsibilitiesYou’ll be hands-on, responsible for managing your own time to achieve targets set by the business, working on the Telecoms network that primarily supports the Control and Visibility of the high-voltage electricity network, you’ll also be involved in installation and reactive maintenance on External Customer circuits. You’ll also:
- Undertaking front line operational support, from a 1st and 2nd line perspective within the NMC environment; in addition configuration of remote devices will also be carried out.
- Managing your own working time to ensure that jobs are completed in the most efficient manner.
- Work with contractors and when necessary witness acceptance tests.
- Work with colleagues and customers to ensure a continuity of service.
- Work safely and in accordance with agreed National Grid procedures and techniques.
- Providing technical support to customers and where necessary liaise with colleagues to solve complex issues.
In this role you will be required to provide front line operational support within the National Grid Telecoms Network Management Centre. This will involve liaising with field based engineers, customers and contractors therefore being committed to providing outstanding customer service and have an ability to communicate well with both colleagues and customers is essential.
You’ll be in control of your diary, we’ll need you to be resilient, organised and able to prioritise your workload. Team players thrive in this role, and you’ll be used to taking a proactive and more consultative approach. Experience using iPads, computers and our additional software is a must along with experience with configuration and fault finding in Layer 2 and Layer 3 IP Networks, including switches, routers and firewalls. Experience with DWDM, MPLS/TP, Microwave, SDH and PDH would be an advantage.
You would ideally have experience as a Telecoms Engineer, so you'll have an understanding of our Network Elements and be qualified to BTEC Level 5 or equivalent in Telecommunications, Data Networks or Electrical Engineering or have extensive relevant experience; however applications are also encouraged from candidates that are able to demonstrate that they have a technical background and the motivation to make a success of this opportunity.
The successful candidate will be required to undertake standby duties in accordance with an agreed rota.
Evidence of your qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
- Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. There are exceptions to this however and examples of these include:
- you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
- you were studying abroad
- you were living overseas with parents
