Job description
Alex Stewart International are currently looking for a Fire Assay Technician to join our team. You will be responsible for providing a robust service for the analysis of precious metals within the Fire Assay department. The purpose of this role is to ensure safe operation of the laboratory when handling instrumentation and other equipment, safely using and storing hazardous materials, and to operate in compliance with the Fire Assay Hygiene and Safety Policy and CLAW Regulations at all times.
Please note that preferred candidates must be willing to work a flexible shift rota on varying hours between 06:00 and 17:00.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Ensure the safe operation of the laboratory at all times to include the general condition of instrumentation and other equipment, use and storage of hazardous materials, work procedures, housekeeping, staff conduct and training.
2. Ensure legislative and best practice compliance issues are observed.
3. Promote good awareness of Health and Safety regulations relating to Laboratory environment.
4. Ensure client requirements are carried out within specification and on time.
5. Liaise with the Laboratory Technical Manager to resolve technical issues.
KEY TASKS
1. To Support the Laboratory Manager/Technical Manager and Quality Managers in all laboratory processes.
2. To weigh test samples to the relevant SOP.
3. Responsible for performing analyses of ore and mill samples by routine fire assay methods involving handling all Fire Assay equipment.
4. Responsible for preparing and making flux material from bought in reagents and to maintain clean working area.
5. Responsible for inputting information into the lab computers, and maintaining other documents as needed.
6. To Work safely with heavy foundry equipment and train in the use of high temperature Furnaces when required.

8. To work in conjunction with Lab chemists for instrumentation processes.
9. Monitor and maintain the equipment required for the analysis of samples, including plant scrubber system’s, furnaces and laboratory clean downs in line with training.
10. To work in accordance with the company Health and Safety policies and maintain good personal hygiene standards as described in the Hygiene policy.
11. To work with the technical team for the development of new staff.
12. To Maintain and co-ordinate a professional work throughput system.
13. Continual monitoring of quality control systems.
14. To organise, with the relevant staff any special requirements or irregular assay instructions required by clients.
15. To perform General laboratory work in line with training.
16. To assist and offer support for any ISO and UKAS accreditation audits throughout the year when requested.
17. To act at all times in compliance with the Confidentiality agreement as signed by all ASI personnel in relation to their working environments.
18. To act in a professional manner at all times and in accordance with the Company Handbook and any HSE guidelines.
19. To perform any other duties as requested by the Laboratory Manager/Technical Manager as and when they occur.
20. To agree and consent to undergoing Lead Medicals and Blood Lead tests on an annual basis in line with the CLAW regulations.
ESSENTIAL KEY SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES
- Able to lease professionally at ALL levels with internal and external customers.
- Able to deliver overall and individual commodity analysis services.
- Good understanding and appreciation of factors involved in delivery quality services profitably.
- Good understanding of quality of service and appreciation of factors involved in delivery a quality service.
- Competence with standard Microsoft software packages and well practiced in preparing Management information and reports.
DESIRABLE KEY SKILLS / ATTRIBUTES
- Working knowledge of analysis commodity sectors (minerals and metals)
- Working knowledge of quality services and the factors involved in delivering a quality service to ISO 17025:2017 standards.
- Professional or academic understanding of science ideally in a scientific discipline.
- Experience of developing and delivering quality analysis services and preparing management reports.
- Experienced in working in a highly pressured and demand focused organisation.
- Sufficient technical understanding and awareness of laboratory services to be able to communicate technical solutions and methods to reflect best practice.
- Experience of preparing training and development programmes.
