Job description
Using Technology the Technical Writer will keep the 407ETR documentation current, useful and accessible by all who need it. Manage and help modernize the various in-house digital document management systems used to publish and archive 407 ETR technical documentation.
- Working with Technology & Infrastructure technical staff (architects, engineers, maintenance technicians, system designers, etc.) and External vendors:
- Analyze existing and future technology systems.
- Understand how they work and distill that information into clear, concise text and visuals depictions and diagrams.
- Create workflow and logical dataflow diagrams.
- Write, adapt, translate and update preventive maintenance and problem-resolution procedures for operations group.
- Write, adapt, translate and update training material for a variety of audiences surrounding our new systems and platforms.
- Vet documentation provided from vendors to ensure it’s accurate and meets the organizations needs
- Design templates to standardize documentation.
- Copy-edit, adapt, render in plain language and translate existing documentation or documentation created by others.
- Help create technical publications (articles) or presentations for use internally and externally.
- Organize and file documentation in information management systems used by the 407 ETR organization
- Apply the appropriate retention schedule for each type of document. Ensure that outdated documents are updated, deleted and/or archived as required
- Moderate or curate and file articles and/or documents created in Wiki-style collaborative information management systems
- Help continually improve departmental procedures and work flows
- Keep abreast of technological trends and developments in the industry.
- Given the growing variety and complexity of the systems being documented, you must be highly resourceful in the methods you use to document and make them understandable to a wide range of users.
- Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, with people from a wide range of business areas within the organization as well as with clients and vendors.
- Be able to explain technical terminology and make complex systems understandable to non-experts.
- Possess an outstanding ability to document existing and future systems, as well as those in the process of being implemented.
- Demonstrate advanced active listening skills.
- Be intellectually curious and interested in understanding and documenting the workings of systems, equipment and technology.
- Community college diploma and five years’ experience in a relevant field (electrical engineering techniques, telecommunications, graphic design, computer science, communications, etc.) or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (engineering, computer science, business writing, communications, etc.)
- Knowledge of office technology: Office 365, and Sharepoint Online
- Knowledge of design tools: Visio and PDF creator
- Assets:
- Knowledge of IT and telecommunications systems
- Knowledge of Remedy and/or Confluence or similar tools
- Knowledge of photo/video creation/editing tools: Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, etc.)
- Knowledge of Lucidchart and AutoCAD design software
- Knowledge of any digital document management system
- Knowledge of one or more of HTML, CSS, JSON, XML or YAML
- Knowledge of one or more programming languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python, React)
