What can I expect to do in this role?
As a Senior Technical Support Specialist, you will:- consult with clients and analyze data processing and data management requirements in relation to program goals/objectives and short/long term business plans and strategies
- conduct and coordinate mainframe database application design and development projects, including developing project plans and identifying necessary resources
- plan and coordinate implementation, including establishing testing process to effectively measure achievement of objectives
- establish and manage the application administration function by developing, maintaining, and controlling definition, organization, protection and documentation of program/data/information structures, and developing application and data management procedures, practices and standards
- provide technical advice and guidance in reviewing and developing recommendations on use of new information engineering and data management/administration tools, techniques and methodologies
- provide input into the development and maintenance of ministry information technologies standards and plans
- provide advice and guidance to clients on use of mainframe database application management techniques and technologies
How do I qualify?
Technical Knowledge
You have:- knowledge of mainframe and micro/personal computer system technologies, application and database management software, and database application development methodology, programming languages, database concepts. In particular, developing and supporting mainframe applications in an IBM z/OS environment; using IBM COBOL, PL/I, ISPF, TSO, JCL/CLIST; against an IBM IMS DB/DC
- knowledge of testing and implementation methods and practices
- knowledge of government information technology policies, directives and guidelines
- ability to acquire and apply ministry's information technology plans and strategies (short and long term)
- knowledge of data management and information architecture theory, principles and techniques, techniques of data modelling using computer aided software, and use of information engineering tools
Reasoning, Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
- you have reasoning and analytical skills to coordinate analysis and development of data management systems
- you have analytical skills to analyze client requirements, identity options, and provide advice and guidance on strategies and recommendations for data management
- you can develop project plans, data management structures and overall mainframe database application design requirements and standards
- you can coordinate design, development and testing of mainframe database applications
- you can develop and recommend policies, standards and procedures for operating issues
- you can research and assess potential use of new information engineering and data management techniques, methodologies, software and hardware
Communication and Presentation Skills
- you have experience preparing systems documentation, draft database application management policies and standards,
- you can lead technical discussion and interview/advise clients, staff and senior management
- you can present findings/recommendations and provide formal/informal training sessions
Negotiation Skills
- you can negotiate contracts for services, hardware, and software with vendors, within defined parameters
