Job description
The Biosphere Foundation is seeking to create the up-scalable and replicable nature-based solution market infrastructure to redirect large-scale private investment into the environment and sequester a significant contribution by 2030 along with other marketable environmental benefits. There is a large tech component to the work of the organisation developing products and services that support Natural Capital monitoring, reporting and validation through the SMART Biosphere programme and the Natural Capital Marketplace. IT is coming much more prominent in a range of environmental solutions and management; we are seen by many to be at the forefront of this approach.
Our vision is to have reliable and proven products and services that can be rapidly deployed with ease of use and ability to support staff and customers for the successful implementation.
We are looking for a technical developer to grow our capacity in house to develop the products and services using Mendix and Mindsphere platforms provided to us kindly by Siemens for the coming 4 years. As the vision is achieved you will be the lead for the roll out and management of the programme and supported in your growth with it.
Specific Duties
- Technical Development and enhancement of the Natural Capital Marketplace platform using Mendix and responding the stakeholder/end-user needs.
- Develop the front-end and back-end capacity of the SMART Biosphere platform using Mindsphere and Mendix platform to link to a variety of data sources for monitoring changes and in and benefits arising from saltmarshes (as part of the Natural Environment Investment Readiness project),
woodlands as part of the WEZ (Woodland Enterprise Zone) programme,
water quality and quantity linked to the DRIP (Devon Resilience Innovation Project) and Environmental Living Labs programmes.
Develop the Forest Connect platform
Support the general IT infrastructure of the North Devon Biosphere Foundation and the Biosphere Foundation CIC
Monitors and evaluates the various hardware and data supplies for efficacy.
- Project Management
Manages the IT projects for the CIC
Complete timely reports for funders, company board, project board and stakeholders
Ensures work is within budget
Supervises staff and contractors as necessary
- Relationships
Reports to the CEO Biosphere Foundation CIC
Close Liaison with the Natural Capital Marketplace Manager
Liaise with stakeholders and project partners such as Siemens, Mendix, universities, etc
Maintain good relations with other data providers, government agencies and potential private sector customers
Liaises with field teams for environmental sensors, data and applications
Works as part of the team in the North Devon Biosphere
Experience & Qualifications
- Proven experience in working in cloud-based, open IoT operating system connecting machines and physical infrastructure to digital data exchange. Experience in Mendix, Mindsphere, AWS would be an advantage.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud-based computing using virtualization and automation technologies.
- Web development experience with both front and back ends to provide end-to-end services for website applications linking databases and user interface. Experience of supplying and drawing from data lake computing would be an advantage.
- Able to communicate to a range of technical and non-technical audiences
- Knowledge in environmental science, monitoring and remote sensing is an advantage
- Creative in blending different data sources to create valuable information for different end-users
- BSc or ideally an MSc in Computing Science
Remuneration
The Biosphere Foundation CIC is currently involved in a number of projects that can support the post for 2 years initially with other income expected as the service and team grows
- Salary: c£32 - 35K depending upon experience
