Work for the world you want to live in.

Wouldn’t you want to live in a world where people, populations and the planet thrive? Where technology protects rather than threatens. Where societies feel safe and secure. Where cities and continents feel part of one global community.

We’re an international aerospace, defence and security company, with sites all-round the UK, that do loads of exciting and important things to make the world safer and more secure. We defend nations, save lives and protect communities around the globe.

Devonport:
The Engineering Design and Draughtsperson Apprenticeship is based at Devonport Royal Dockyard in Plymouth.
Working at Devonport puts the best of the South West at your fingertips. Amazing scenery, vibrant towns and numerous leisure opportunities - It’s why Devon and Cornwall are such desirable places to live and work.

Comprising of 14 dry docks, four miles of waterfront and 25 tidal berths, Devonport is the base for numerous surface vessels as well as the base and refit centre for the Trafalgar-class nuclear-powered submarines. Devonport has also recently been selected as the base port for the Navy’s new Type 26 frigates and will become the maintenance centre for the future submarine programme.

For more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence Company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services. We help customers in the UK and around the world to improve the capability, reliability and availability of their most critical assets within the four market sectors of Marine, Land, Aviation, and Nuclear, underpinned by a deep understanding of technology integration, unique infrastructure and specialist training.

Engineering Design and Draughtsperson Apprenticeship:
This apprenticeship covers five main disciplines within the occupation of Engineering Design and Draughtsperson:
  • Electrical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Control and Instrumentation Design and Draughtsperson
  • Mechanical Design and Draughtsperson
  • Piping Design and Draughtsperson
  • Structural Design and Draughtsperson

An apprentice gains a basic understanding of all of these disciplines before then specialising in one or more.

Engineering design and draughtspersons produce designs and drawings for structures, piping, electrical systems, control and instrumentation systems and mechanical components. Through this apprenticeship you will learn to understand technical drawings and specifications and be able to create your own; identify factors likely to affect design decisions; produce CAD (computer aided design) models and engineering drawings and; be able to communicate design information to internal and external parties.

Possible placements:
Apprentices will spend their full first year at College, followed by 1 day per week in years 2 and 3 with the other 4 days per week onsite. The 4th year will be spent exclusively onsite.

All apprentices will undertake a number of work placements across the site in year 2 to gain an insight into all operations from a design perspective before joining a specialised team of designers undertaking a varied range of Projects including design packages to support submarine and surface ship refits for the Royal Navy as well as International Commercial and Naval contracts.

Qualifications you’ll gain:
You may gain a variety of qualifications throughout your apprenticeship, however the culmination of the apprenticeship is passing the required End Point Assessment, which gains you your nationally recognised apprenticeship certificate as a Level 3 Engineering Technician.

What you’ll need:
A minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including English, Maths and a Science or Technology based subject.

What you’ll get:
