Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary is looking to appoint a full time animal care assistant as part of small, dedicated, team of staff in a largely volunteer based organisation . We are a registered charity based at Bell’s Farm in Spurriers Lane, Melling. This is a rural setting just off junction 1 of the M58 and you will need your own transport both for getting to work and for travel on behalf of the Sanctuary as part of your duties. You will need a minimum of 2 years experience of animal care in a commercial setting ideally in a rescue or veterinary environment. We are mainly foster based dealing mostly with cats, kittens, dogs and small furries but we will do our best to help any animal in need which in the past has included chickens, birds, giant land snails and even a marmoset monkey. You will work closely with the General Manager regarding all aspects of your role and support her as required to achieve the aims & objectives of the Sanctuary. We specialise in the care and rehabilitation of disabled animals and we have a number of disabled residents on site as well as several dogs who will spend their lives with the Sanctuary for a variety of reasons & you will be involved in their day to day care. We are about to open our new doggy hospice which will provide end of life care for up to 4 animals at any time & you will be involved in providing day to day care, love and attention to these animals in their last days and weeks. Animals are normally admitted via Bell’s Farm and you will be involved with the reception of admitted animals , their initial assessment in conjunction with the General Manager and our vet nurse if necessary. We also operate a community neutering programme for cats, kittens and small dogs at our on site vet room and you will support the vet nurse & vet staff on vet days by receiving animals arriving for treatment and by dealing with owners when they come to collect the animals. You will liaise with our volunteers to organise transport for animals going out to foster, being brought to the vet days for vaccinations, neutering etc and also to transport dogs to other rescues when we are unable to offer a space ourselves. You will work in the farm house, various outbuildings and the grounds of the farm and be expected to help to maintain a tidy & safe environment which will include manual tasks requiring a degree of physical fitness. We are about to embark on a refurbishment scheme for the farmhouse which will involve a substantial amount of building work on site and you will need to be able to assist in moving operational equipment around the house & site as work commences.
You will be the first point of contact for the public and many of our volunteers via phone, email, social media and in person and you will need excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will also be social media savvy and able to keep our social media presence up to date and interesting as well as promoting animals needing homes. You will work a 40 hour week of 5 days over 7 normally Sunday to Thursday although flexibility will be needed to cover sickness or holidays or other staff members and emergencies. You will be paid at national minimum wage rates, paid monthly and your holiday entitlement will be 5.6 weeks per year including Bank Holidays. We offer membership of the NEST pension scheme . The post will be temporary for the first 6 months probationary period and can be terminated by 1 week’s notice by either side during this period. After the successful completion of the probationary period it will become a permanent position. The advert may close earlier if a large number of applications are received .
