Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. Our scenic campus is located in Albemarle County, Virginia. We are one of 23 community colleges in Virginia that comprise the Virginia Community College System (VCCS Piedmont Virginia Community College seeks a full-time College Success Navigator who will be responsible for actively working with instructors to plan outreach and academic support for selected students in certain gateway PVCC courses. The Navigator will reach out to the identified students, who may be at-risk to struggle in these classes without support and connect them to appropriate academic support. The College Success Navigator will continue to follow up with and encourage the students to make use of the academic support services. This is a grant-funding position that will continue through the Fall 2024 spring semester.
The Navigator will be encouraging student growth and development, using best practices to encourage student persistence towards the achievement of a college credential. Additionally, the person employed in this position will recognize that many of the obstacles that students face are non-academic and will endeavor to connect these students with the necessary resources so that they can be successful.
The College Success Navigator reports directly to the Senior Director of Student Success and Support and works as a key member of the Student Affairs Division to promote student success and completion. This position supports the work of a research grant.
Duties include:
- Work with instructors and dedicated academic supports to develop a personalized academic success plan for individual students.
- Discuss with instructors upcoming assignments and key concepts and knowledge students will need to perform well on the assignments.
- Meet individually with students to discuss all challenges (academic and non-academic) that the students may be encountering and connect students to campus- and community-based resources to address those challenges.
- Actively communicate with instructors, academic support staff, and the students throughout the semester to ensure the students are receiving sufficient and personalized academic and non-academic supports.
- Monitor the college’s early alert system to keep tabs on student performance and respond appropriately to alerts and referrals.
- Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to offer programs that reflect a diverse and inclusive campus community.
- Assist the Student Affairs Division with general student initiatives that impact retention including student orientation, jump start academies, and first year programs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbally
- Organizational skills
- Technological skills including Excel, Word, Canva/Desktop publishing, and social media marketing.
- Skills in organizing and marketing programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in student development, higher education, or student affairs
- Community College experience.
- Experience working with a diverse student population.
